Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. Gender equality, equal opportunities, and diversity are fundamental principles for all parts of our operations.

Description of the Department

The position is at the Department of Electrical and Information Technology and the Communication Technology Division at Lund University’s Faculty of Engineering, LTH.

The division has 13 senior researchers and about 20 PhD students and works with wireless communication in a broad sense. This includes communication theory, channel measurements/modeling, implementation of advanced testbeds, as well as control and estimation over wireless networks.

We are now looking for a new colleague in the form of a PhD student in electrical engineering with a focus on integrated communication and control.

Being a PhD Student

As a PhD student, you are both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University.

As a research student, you are trained in a scientific approach. This can be briefly described as gaining practice in critical and analytical thinking, solving problems independently using the right methodological choices, and developing a research ethical awareness. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to work on projects, develop your leadership skills, and enhance your pedagogical abilities. Throughout your studies, you will be guided by supervisors. Research studies conclude with a dissertation and a doctoral degree.

Subject and Project Description

The research area for this position is integrated communication and control. The project encompasses theory and algorithms for goal-oriented, semantics-aware communication that enables efficient, intelligent, and adaptive information exchange in autonomous systems. The specific focus for this position in the project will be to further develop existing theory and algorithms for applications within multi-agent systems such as multiple communicating vehicles and multi-hop communication.

The project is a collaboration with Linköping University, which includes opportunities for research visits.

The project is funded by ELLIIT, a strategic research environment funded by the Swedish government since 2010, as part of its initiative to support strong research in information technology and mobile communication. ELLIIT serves as a platform for both basic and applied research.

Job Responsibilities

You will primarily focus on your doctoral education, which includes participation in research projects as well as doctoral courses, seminars, and conferences. Your tasks will also include participation in teaching and other departmental work (but a maximum of 20% of working time).

Your research will focus on how new performance metrics and algorithms can be utilized and adapted to improve the efficiency of goal-oriented communication within complex applications involving multi-agent systems. Your work is expected to contribute to a more comprehensive theory of semantic information and goal-oriented communication. Examples of applications include systems involving many vehicles as well as static and dynamic multi-hop wireless communication. In these contexts, you will work with integrated communication and control, where you will utilize and further develop previously established performance metrics and metrics such as Age of Information (AoI) and its later variants. You will model and work with wireless communication at both the physical layer and the network layer.

The research includes mathematical modeling, control/regulation, optimization, reinforcement learning, and estimation. You will primarily work with modeling, theory development, implementation of algorithms, and simulations, but towards the later part of the project, the work may also include physical experiments.

Qualifications

To be admitted and employed as a PhD student, you must meet the requirements below.
