The Swedish Prison and Probation Service is Growing – We are Building New Facilities and Hiring More Staff

Our primary goal is to reduce recidivism – to break the vicious cycle. If we succeed, society becomes safer and more secure for everyone. We are the authority responsible for prisons, probation, detention centers, and client transport.

The Skogome area is the largest prison in Sweden for men convicted of sexual offenses in security class 2. There is also a smaller psychiatric care unit. The Skogome prison opened in 1957 and is located at Lillhagsvägen 301 on Hisingen in Gothenburg. The prison currently has about 250 employees distributed across several different professional groups and competencies. In a renovation and new construction project starting this year, the prison will nearly double its capacity, with more modern facilities and larger spaces for treatment and activities.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

As a correctional officer, you are the foundation of security work. You work in teams with other professional groups to maintain a safe and secure environment and motivate clients towards a life without crime. Clear routines are a natural part of your daily work. You are the one who opens the door to the living quarters in the morning and locks it in the evening. You accompany clients to work and education, conduct searches, and supervise the exercise yard and training facilities. You also have daily contact with clients to know how they are doing and are part of the release preparations.

Do you want a job where you contribute to a safer society and can make a difference for others? Do you want to work with wonderful colleagues where the camaraderie is strong and everyone supports each other?

It is important that you share the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's fundamental values of a humane view of humanity, respect for the individual, and belief in the potential for personal development and change. You should also have an awareness of and understanding of how background, culture, and group affiliation affect oneself and others.

Working in a prison is varied: care, security, search, and safety work are mixed with release planning and motivational work. You will start your employment with an introduction period of three weeks. After a period of service, you will be offered a place in the mandatory basic training for correctional officers, which lasts 8 weeks. You will receive a salary during the entire training period. During the probationary period, ongoing assessments will be conducted regarding your suitability for permanent employment.

In this recruitment process, information meetings will be held to give you a better understanding of what it means to work at Skogome prison. The information meetings will be held on two occasions, and if you are called, you will need to attend one of them. A separate invitation will be sent if you proceed in the process.

QUALIFICATIONS

Your personal qualities are important. As a correctional officer, you need to be secure, stable, have good self-awareness, sound judgment, and integrity. Together with your colleagues, you will drive the operations, so you need to have good collaboration skills and be clear in your communication. You should be able to act physically when required.
