Postdoctoral Researcher in Computational Mathematics at Lund University

Job Responsibilities and Duties

At Lund University, a postdoctoral position is intended to provide opportunities for scientific and pedagogical qualification.

Primarily, there is room for qualification in research, but also for some higher education pedagogical training. Teaching may also be included in the job responsibilities (max 20%).

You will participate in the further development of the DUNE-FEM package to support computations on GPU hardware using various types of finite element methods. This work is embedded in a research project that investigates structure-preserving finite element methods for multiphase flows with applications in X-ray tomography.

Qualifications

Requirements for the position are:

  • a PhD or equivalent foreign degree in computational mathematics, numerical analysis, or similar; the PhD must be obtained by the time the employment decision is made;
  • good ability to develop and conduct high-quality research; pedagogical skills;
  • knowledge of finite element methods;
  • in-depth knowledge of C++ in relation to scientific software;
  • you have acquired one of the following two skills (both are meritorious): previous implementations of algorithms and simulations with modern GPU hardware, or in-depth knowledge and experience of the DUNE software environment (https://dune-project.org/) (knowledge and experience of DUNE-FEM is meritorious);
  • very good oral and written skills in English.

Meritorious for the position are:

  • primarily, the applicant in question has obtained a degree no more than three years before the application deadline;
  • experience in interdisciplinary research is highly meritorious;
  • experience in high-performance computing research, especially on GPU clusters, is meritorious.

The assessment of applicants will primarily be based on their scientific merits and potential as researchers. Special emphasis will be placed on scientific ability within the subject area. Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive, and independence, as well as how the applicant's experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they can contribute to its future development.

About the Position

This is a full-time position with a fixed term of 2 years. The employment period is determined in accordance with the collective agreement on fixed-term employment as a postdoctoral researcher (Arbetsgivarverket). A postdoctoral position is intended as an initial step in the career and as an opportunity to further deepen and broaden research competence.

The desired start date for the position is May 1, but no later than September 1, 2026.

At the Faculty of Science, research and education are conducted in biology, astronomy, physics, geoscience, chemistry, mathematics, and environmental science. The activities are conducted at eight departments located within the northern university area. The faculty has about 1,500 students, 360 doctoral students, and 700 employees.
