School Counselor

As a school counselor, you are employed within the central Child and Student Health, but your main workplace is at three schools - Duvnäs School, Saltängen School, and Ektorps School - within the Skuru-Duvnäs principal area.

Your mission

In the role of school counselor, you work with promotional and preventive measures to create good conditions for students' learning, development, and health. The work is carried out at the individual, group, and school unit level. You belong to the schools' student health team, which also consists of school leaders, school nurses, special educators, and school psychologists. You support school management and staff in prioritizing, planning, and implementing psychosocial interventions for students. You contribute your psychosocial and social competence as support in the pedagogical work and in the overall planning of student health work.

You will be part of the central Child and Student Health, which includes about 20 school counselors. Even though you are placed at different schools, you have a close collaboration through regular meetings and a strong network. Furthermore, you collaborate with school staff, students, guardians, and external actors to promote students' well-being and development.

Your main tasks:

• Participation in the school's student health team
• Supportive, motivating, investigative, and advisory student conversations, both individually and in groups
• Advice and support to guardians regarding parenting as well as referral to appropriate support agencies
• Supervision and consultation to school management and school staff on psychosocial issues
• Informing about, collaborating with, and coordinating contacts with various support agencies in the community, such as social services, psychiatry, habilitation, child and adolescent psychiatry, and the police
• Participation in the school's overall promotional and preventive safety and equal treatment work
• Work with classes and groups based on safety, well-being, and health-promoting themes

Your experience

For this position, you are required to have:

• a degree in social work
• current experience working as a counselor and/or with youth with psychosocial issues
• experience working with children/youth
• good ability to express yourself well in Swedish, both orally and in writing.

It is an advantage if you also have:

• experience working as a school counselor
• good knowledge of the school as an organization
• knowledge of and experience working with children/youth in need of special support
• experience working within social services.

You have both the interest and ability to collaborate, communicate, and build good relationships with students, guardians, school staff, and external actors. You value teamwork and the knowledge of different professions, while also understanding the importance of creating a safe environment where students and guardians feel comfortable opening up. As the sole counselor at the school, it is important that you are self-driven. You plan and structure your work based on the needs of the organization and the students, always with a preventive and health-promoting focus. The central Child and Student Health consists of school doctors, school nurses, counselors, psychologists, special educators, and speech therapists. Our unique competencies complement the educators' knowledge. We are a large group with a lot of drive and focus on preventive and health-promoting work.

As a school counselor, you will have a free work environment with the opportunity to influence and shape your role based on the needs of the organization and the students while receiving help and support from a large group of colleagues with expertise in various areas. As part of the central Child and Student Health, you will regularly meet with different personnel categories for professional development and sharing of experiences.
