PhD Candidate in Sociology of Law – Executive Regulations and Authoritarian Governance in Central Asia

Project Description

This PhD project investigates how executive regulations and normative acts – often outside parliamentary influence – are used in authoritarian regimes to regulate public life.

The research will explore legal fragmentation, governance mechanisms, and informal hierarchies within Central Asia's legal systems. The project is part of the SOCIAL Doctoral Network, funded by Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions under Horizon Europe.

The sociology of law at Lund University is a social science subject that studies the relationship between law and society, such as the tension between the state's formal legislation and informal norm formation in, for example, civil society. Research is conducted in fields such as gender and discrimination, AI and machine learning, children's rights, welfare, legal cultures, corruption, migration, economic security, and crime. The department offers courses at all levels and also runs a bachelor's program in criminology in collaboration with the Department of Sociology. The sociology of law department strives to collaborate across subject and disciplinary boundaries and has good contacts with practitioners and authorities.
