In spring 2026, we are looking for two thesis students to study Multi-UAV Planning. You will become part of the System & Software team, which consists of about 35 employees focusing on system and software development for helicopters and ground stations. In addition to an interesting thesis problem, you will also gain good insight into the work environment of a high-tech company. During your thesis period, you will of course have a mentor for guidance, delimitation, and system understanding.

A team of UAVs can perform more missions than a single UAV, but the task of planning and flying such a team is also more complex. Therefore, mission planning tools for teams of UAVs are useful to help operators manage their UAVs. The purpose of the thesis is to design and evaluate one or more multi-UAV planners that can solve planning tasks like the example below. It is desirable if the tool can also be used for replanning, as conditions may change during flight.

Example of a planning task: A team of 5 UAVs should continuously survey an area for 12 hours, so that each surface is visited at least every 10 minutes. Each UAV has a limited amount of fuel and must land at the home base before the fuel runs out. After refueling, it is available to continue the mission. Create a plan for the team so that they can manage the task. The plan should include start times, flight paths, and speeds for each UAV.

The planning task can be adapted or expanded depending on your ideas or areas of interest, for example with the following:

• Increased complexity with multiple UAVs with different capabilities and multiple search areas
• Replanning due to new wind conditions, new tasks, or if a UAV crashes and others need to take over its tasks.

We are looking for two thesis students who plan to do their thesis work in spring 2026 within a relevant technical field, such as: Computer Science, Engineering Physics and Electrical Engineering, Software Development. It is an advantage if you can program and/or have knowledge in AI.
