Center X is now seeking a postdoctoral researcher in advanced surface technology.

Center X (Advanced Manufacturing Solutions for Next Generation Powertrain) is a new powerful initiative for the manufacturing of innovative powertrain solutions, jointly initiated by the Royal Institute of Technology, Chalmers University of Technology, Scania, and AB Volvo.

The primary aim of this position is to promote the understanding and application of surface technology, focusing on improving system performance, reliability, and modern methods for characterizing surface structure. This position is aimed at developing innovative surface modification techniques intended to enhance the physical and chemical properties of materials, with targeted applications in sectors such as energy storage, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing.

The qualified and selected candidate will utilize advanced methods, including deposition techniques, coating technologies, micro- and nanotexturing, as well as surface structure characterization, while integrating these methods with advanced computational tools for modeling and analysis.

The postdoctoral researcher will work within a multidisciplinary team in close collaboration with industry and contribute to both experimental and theoretical studies. This role offers opportunities to engage with international partners and industry leaders to translate research into real-world solutions. The postdoctoral researcher will primarily conduct research during the employment period while developing their independence as a researcher and creating conditions for further qualification. The postdoctoral researcher may also be involved in and contribute to teaching at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels.

Qualifications

Requirements

PhD degree or foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctorate (in materials science, mechanical engineering, or a closely related field). This eligibility requirement must be met by the time the employment decision is made.
Research expertise in surface technology, including deposition, coating techniques, or surface modification processes.
Experience in computational modeling for material surfaces and characterization techniques (e.g., WLI, FV, LCC, SEM, XRD, AFM).
Fluency in English, both spoken and written, as this is used in daily work.
Documented experience in publishing scientific research.

Meritorious

At the application deadline, no more than three years since the PhD degree or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctorate was obtained.
Previous work in surface technology relevant to production technology.
Experience collaborating with industry partners or working in international research environments.
Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a team.
As a person, you are strong in communication and project management skills.
Pedagogical ability.
Awareness of diversity and equality issues, with a particular focus on gender equality.
