Lund University was founded in 1666 and is consistently ranked as one of the world's leading universities. There are about 47,000 students and more than 8,800 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain, and improve our world and the conditions of people.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. Gender equality, equal opportunities, and diversity are fundamental principles for all parts of our operations.

Lund University, Lund University of Technology, and the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI) announce a joint recruitment for a PhD position in industrial electrical engineering.

Workplace Description

The Department of Industrial Electronics and Automation (IEA) has about 30 employees and is located in the newly renovated M-building on LTH's campus in Lund. Research at IEA focuses on electrical systems, electric drive systems, and drainage systems. All research aims for a sustainable society, in line with the EU's climate goals and the UN's global goals for sustainable development. In practice, scientific methods for modeling, analysis, and control are applied to systems of industrially relevant complexity. These methods are usually validated through pilot trials, real data, or experiments in IEA's new power laboratories. PhD students are encouraged to take significant responsibility for research and engage in societal issues, as well as build networks within and outside academia. IEA is actively engaged and has leading roles within the Swedish Electromobility Centre (SEC), the Swedish Energy Storage and Balancing Centre (SESBC), and LTH's profile area Energy Transition.

The PhD student will be admitted full-time (100%) to the doctoral program at Lund University, Lund University of Technology – LTH. The selected candidate will be employed 50% at the Department of Industrial Electrical Engineering and Automation (IEA), LTH, Lund University, and 50% at the Traffic Analysis and Logistics unit (TAL), at the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI), with offices in Lund.

Subject Description

Industrial electrical engineering focuses on technology and systems for electrical and electromechanical energy conversion. The subject is inherently interdisciplinary with strong elements of electromagnetism, power electronics and electronics, materials technology, electrical machine design, control engineering, as well as real-time systems, industrial automation, and electrical measurement technology.

Electrification emerges as the most promising path to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from both passenger and freight transport. Local and regional distribution trucks with predictable routes over moderate distances are good examples of vehicles that can be electrified. However, charging battery electric trucks (BET) may require extensive and costly grid upgrades at logistics terminals. With bidirectional charging – known as Vehicle2Grid for passenger cars and thus Truck2Grid in this project – BET becomes an active resource in the grid, alleviating issues with high-power charging and providing additional revenue linked to arbitrage trading and the provision of system services.

Within this position, the selected candidate will develop tools and models to quantitatively assess the opportunities and consequences of integrating local and regional distribution battery electric trucks as an active resource in the grid by enabling bidirectional charging, compared to more rudimentary charging strategies. The assessment will be conducted in terms of available energy and power, both locally at the charging site and at a higher level in the grid. Additionally, the associated costs and revenues for the various solutions will be analyzed. To ensure the practical relevance of this work, real operational data from several transport companies in the project will be used in the evaluation.

The selected PhD student will primarily work on the project Truck2Grid: Assessment of V2G applications in freight transport, funded by the Swedish Energy Agency.
