Project Description
PhD Subject: Information and Communication Technology
Wireless communication technology has evolved over five generations, but the demand for higher efficiency, availability, and reliability never ends.
The physical layer of 5G and 6G networks revolves around MIMO technology with antenna arrays. 5G uses 64 antennas in each base station and four antennas in devices, which can increase by 5-10 times in 6G. Combined with well-designed signal processing algorithms, these antennas can be used for beamforming, spatial multiplexing, and integrated communication and radar (so-called ISAC).
In this PhD project, you will contribute to groundbreaking 6G MIMO technology research and develop new communication theory and new signal processing algorithms. The focus may be on Gigantic MIMO, cell-free networks, near-field communication, MIMO satellite communication, or ISAC. The research will focus on the physical and medium control layers. Methods from MIMO communication theory, array signal processing, optimization, and machine learning are likely to play an important role. The research will primarily be theoretical, but KTH has testbeds for potential experiments. However, we are not looking for microwave engineers as no antennas or hardware will be built.
You will belong to the world-leading research group of Prof. Emil Björnson (IEEE Fellow, Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher) and work in the Department of Communication Systems at the EECS school. The research is funded by external projects, so there will be good opportunities to interact with the telecommunications industry.
You can read the article "Enabling 6G Performance in the Upper Mid-Band by Transitioning From Massive to Gigantic MIMO", arXiv 2407.05630 to learn more about the research we plan to conduct within this project.
Supervision: Professor Emil Björnson, Cicek Cavdar, Ki Won Sung

Eligibility for Admission
To be admitted to doctoral education (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:
- completed a master's degree, or
- completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the master's level, or
- acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, either within or outside the country.
In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English corresponding to English B/6.
Selection
To succeed in your doctoral studies at KTH, you need to be goal-oriented and persistent in your work. In the selection of applicants, the ability to:
- independently drive your work forward,
- collaborate with others,
- have a professional approach,
- analyze and work with complex issues,
- and communicate well in English.
After the eligibility requirements, great importance will be placed on personal qualities.
Target Degree:
Doctorate
Information on Admission and Employment
Only those who have been admitted to doctoral education may be employed as doctoral students. The total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. An employed doctoral student may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within, for example, education and administration. A new employment as a doctoral student is valid for a maximum of one year, and the employment may then be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. In studies that will conclude with a licentiate degree, the total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for two years.

Application
You apply via KTH's recruitment system. As an applicant, you have the primary responsibility for ensuring that your application is complete when submitted.
The application must be received by KTH no later than the last application day at midnight, CET/CEST (Central European Time/Central European Summer Time).
The application should contain the following:
- CV with relevant professional experiences and skills.
- Cover letter with a brief account of why you want to pursue doctoral studies, your academic interests, and how they relate to your previous studies and future goals (Max 2 pages). You must indicate whether you are most interested in mobile networks or satellite communication.
- Copies of degree certificates and transcripts from previous university studies and certificates of fulfilled language requirements (see above). Translations into English or Swedish if the original document is not issued in one of these languages. Copies of originals must be certified.
- Representative publications or technical reports. For longer documents, please attach a summary (abstract) and a web link to the full text.
Other
The pursuit of equality, diversity, and equal opportunities is both a quality issue and an obvious part of KTH's values.
For information on the processing of personal data in connection with recruitment.
It may occur that an employment at KTH is classified. If this is the case for this employment, a security review of the applicant will be conducted in accordance with the Security Protection Act (2018:585) after consent. In these cases, a prerequisite for employment is that the applicant is approved after the security review.
We kindly ask for no direct contact with staffing, recruitment companies, or advertisers of job postings.
