Stockholm Music Pedagogical Institute SMI is seeking a LECTURER IN MUSIC EDUCATION 50-60%

potentially in combination with a role as STUDY DIRECTOR 40-50%

Stockholm Music Pedagogical Institute, SMI, is a private educational provider founded in 1960 and a music academy since 1981. The primary education at SMI is for music educators (with specializations in instrument/vocal, music creation, or performance poetry and storytelling) and aims for students to teach at music and culture schools and in other activities where voluntary education is offered. Students who wish to obtain the teaching qualifications required by primary and secondary schools can complete a supplementary pedagogical education (KPU) of 90 credits at another institution after graduating from SMI's music pedagogy program. SMI also trains logonomists (voice pedagogues with an artistic focus) and offers independent courses with artistic and didactic focus.

SMI is located in adapted facilities for music and artistic creation on the Flemingsberg campus in Huddinge municipality. SMI has approximately 90 program students who study alongside about 23,000 students on the campus from the four other universities (Södertörn University, KTH, KI, and the Red Cross University) as well as Idun Lovén Art School.

SMI's Research Area

SMI's goal is to develop a dynamic research environment of high quality, particularly in collaboration with other researchers and organizations. Research at SMI is initiated and conducted as part of the role, closely related to the main activities for which the university educates. Students' independent works are clearly linked to SMI's main areas, music pedagogy and logonomy, often through practice-oriented research methods. An important goal is for the research to involve teachers affiliated with SMI, as well as other educators working in child, youth, and adult education.

Job Responsibilities

The job responsibilities include teaching and course responsibility in various courses within pedagogy, didactics, theory of science, and research methods, supervision and examination of thesis projects, course and program development, as well as personal research. Administrative work related to the relevant courses and subject areas is included in the assignment.

In addition to these responsibilities, the role includes working with the university's management, closest research colleagues, and other staff to:

  • develop a research-based educational environment, where research results are highlighted and reflected in the basic education programs, as well as new research questions are drawn from basic education and professional practice
  • define strategic and qualitative goals for research at SMI
  • develop action plans for establishing research at SMI
  • initiate and participate in research projects relevant to teaching and studies at SMI
  • promote collaboration in research projects with other actors within and outside the academic world
  • seek external funding for research at SMI

The position may also be offered in combination with a role as study director for certain specializations in SMI's educational programs. For this, administrative competence in study administration may be assessed particularly. See Appendix 1 for the job description.

Qualifications

Eligible for employment as a lecturer is someone who has demonstrated pedagogical skill, has obtained a doctoral degree or has equivalent scientific competence or other professional skills that are significant in relation to the subject matter of the position and the job responsibilities included in the employment (Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4).

Scientific competence is demonstrated through independent research efforts in the area of employment. Planning and management of research should also be given importance.

Pedagogical competence is demonstrated through previous teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels. The assessment of pedagogical skill concerns both planning, implementation, and evaluation of teaching, as well as supervision and examination. The pedagogical competence must be well documented in such a way that the quality can be assessed.

Assessment Criteria

For employment as a teacher at SMI, it is required that you have completed 15 credits of higher education pedagogical training or otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge (this must be documented).

Of particular importance for the position is that the applicant can demonstrate pedagogical and scientific competence regarding teaching and research within the music pedagogical/didactic knowledge area. Experience in artistic and pedagogical development work as well as supervision and examination of theses at the university level is of great importance. Documented experience of applying for external research funding is also important.

Experience in relevant music teaching and in one's own artistic leadership and practice in the cultural life of society is meritorious. Also meritorious is documented ability to collaborate with a strong interest in the development of the music pedagogy subject, a documented ability to initiate and successfully lead research projects, and experience and ability to lead an organization. Knowledge of youth culture and youth identity, gender/gender studies, and leisure learning, as well as knowledge of aesthetic learning processes, is also meritorious.

We also value good administrative competence, a good ability to inform about research and development work, as well as a good ability to collaborate with colleagues and the surrounding community.

Application should consist of

  • Personal letter with motivation
  • CV including verified merit summary, with references
  • Pedagogical merit portfolio
  • Account of scientific merits including publication list and/or digital materials (photo, cd, radio, tv, film)
  • Copies of certified diplomas/certificates, degree certificates, etc.
  • Electronic documents/links of scientific writings referenced (maximum ten works).

NOTE! Applications as above should be submitted electronically via the link: https://www.webbenkater.com/s/meritporfolj
