Research Assistant at the Swedish Museum of Natural History

The Swedish Museum of Natural History is a government authority tasked by the government to promote knowledge, research, and interest in our world. The authority is a prominent research institution and Sweden's largest museum. For over 200 years, the museum has collected objects and data and conducted research on life on Earth. The collections contain more than 11 million plants, animals, fungi, environmental samples, minerals, and fossils. All research and knowledge are shared in exhibitions, Cosmonova, and activities at the museum and digitally.

The Zoology unit is responsible for approximately 5 million specimens. The collections include invaluable historical items from the 18th century onwards. The collections are continuously expanded and used by the unit's own researchers as well as researchers worldwide. The preservation and systematic organization of physical collections, along with digitization, are essential activities to ensure the accessibility of the collections for the future.

We are now seeking two research assistants for fixed-term positions. One position is for 6 months starting July 1, 2025, and the other is for 7 months starting June 1, 2025.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

You will work with the registration of scientific zoological collections in the database, focusing on preserved crustacean material (Crustacea) and dry-prepared insects.

Tasks that enhance the preservation of the collections may occur.

QUALIFICATIONS

Requirements

  • Academic degree in biology, with a focus on systematic zoology or equivalent
  • Experience working with scientific natural history museum collections
  • Knowledge of natural science collections and their significance
  • Good knowledge of Swedish in both spoken and written form
  • Good knowledge of English in both spoken and written form

Meritorious

  • Other relevant education for the tasks
  • Experience working in a database
  • Experience in object photography
  • Experience working with scientific zoological museum collections in alcohol or dry preparations
  • Knowledge of taxonomic and nomenclatural principles
  • Language skills beyond Swedish and English
  • Ability to interpret handwritten text

You need to be structured and meticulous, as well as have a good ability to collaborate with others.
