Research Assistants at the Swedish Museum of Natural History

The Swedish Museum of Natural History is a government agency tasked by the government to promote knowledge, research, and interest in our world. The agency is a prominent research institution and Sweden's largest museum. For over 200 years, the museum has collected objects and data and conducted research on life on Earth. The collections contain more than 11 million plants, animals, fungi, environmental samples, minerals, and fossils. All research and knowledge are shared in exhibitions, Cosmonova, and in activities at the museum and digitally.

We are now looking for two research assistants to help with the digitization of our botanical collections. This is a temporary project expected to last until December.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Work with scientific botanical-mycological collections, e.g., registration, labeling, mounting, and sorting of plant and fungus materials.

Participate in other tasks within the unit and department as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in biology or a related field
  • Knowledge of scientific collections and their significance
  • Good ability to handle digital tools, especially the Office suite
  • Good knowledge of Swedish and English, both spoken and written

Meritorious:

  • Bachelor's degree in systematic biology (or equivalent) with a focus on botany/mycology in the broadest sense
  • Experience with database work and digitizing/registering scientific collections
  • Knowledge of FileMaker
  • Language skills beyond Swedish and English, particularly German and French
  • Experience interpreting and understanding older handwritten label material
  • Knowledge and experience in botanical collection management
  • Understanding of collection-based research, especially taxonomy and nomenclature
  • Knowledge of geography
  • A strong and active interest in and knowledge of botanical-mycological biodiversity (species knowledge)
