Meteorological Institution at Stockholm University (MISU)
The Meteorological Institution at Stockholm University (MISU) conducts research and education that spans the atmosphere, ocean, and physically based climate science.
We offer educational programs at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels. Our research seeks answers to fundamental questions about the dynamic, physical, chemical, and biogeochemical properties of the atmosphere and oceans that are relevant to weather and climate. The research activities are broad and encompass processes ranging from the deep sea to the upper atmosphere, and from the tropics to the poles. We utilize and develop theory, statistical methods, and numerical models in close interplay with observations. Additionally, the institution develops and leads observational-based research supported by satellites, Arctic icebreaker expeditions, and land-based instruments.
MISU is part of a larger research environment at the university, including the Bolin Centre for Climate Research (https://www.su.se/bolincentret-for-klimatforskning/), the Baltic Sea Centre (https://www.su.se/stockholms-universitets-ostersjocentrum/), and e-science.se (https://e-science.se/). The institution is an international workplace and over half of the staff have a background outside of Sweden. More information about us can be found on our website (https://www.su.se/department-of-meteorology/).
Project Description
We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher for our interdisciplinary project Tracing How Atlantic Water Impacts North Greenland (https://kaw.wallenberg.org/inflode-av-atlantvatten-i-arktis-hotar-gronlands-isar), funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation. The position is ideal for a researcher with a solid physics background who is interested in applying principles from fluid dynamics and mathematical modeling to climate-related challenges in ocean-glacier dynamics.
This is one of a total of six postdoctoral positions within THAWING.
Responsibilities
As a postdoctoral researcher, you will investigate ocean-glacier interactions using theoretical methods and ocean circulation modeling. Our research group has collected unique data from three icebreaker expeditions to North Greenland, which can be integrated into your work. An important research question is how the Earth's rotation and fjord-glacier geometry limit the inflow of warmer Atlantic water towards the glaciers, affecting the melting of marine glaciers.
Within the project, you will have the opportunity to:
- Explore the interaction between processes near the ocean-glacier boundary and the flow limitations arising from rotation and fjord-glacier geometry; factors that ultimately control the relationship between marine glacier melting and oceanic conditions on a larger Arctic scale.
- Collaborate with experts in physical oceanography, glacier dynamics, marine geophysics, and paleoceanography.
- Contribute to enhancing our understanding of the complex interplay between the ocean and the Greenland Ice Sheet, and how this affects both past and future changes in climate and sea level.
Eligibility Requirements
A postdoctoral researcher is defined as an employee primarily employed for research who has obtained a doctoral degree or has a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree.
Assessment Criteria
The doctoral degree must be in geophysics, physics, or another relevant subject. The degree must be obtained by the time the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, the doctoral degree may have been obtained earlier. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, union duties, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or relevant service/assignments for the subject area.
In the appointment, particular emphasis will be placed on scientific expertise in ocean and/or glacial dynamics. Documented experience in ocean circulation modeling focusing on interactions between the ocean and glaciers is particularly meritorious. The candidate should be able to work well both independently and in a group, and be able to perform according to specified deadlines as the project has specific milestones. The applicant is also expected to have excellent oral and written skills in English.
About the Position
The position is full-time and is permanent, but for at least two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension if there are special reasons. Start date is September 1, 2025, or by agreement.
Contact
Inquiries about the position can be directed to Professor Johan Nilsson, johan.nilsson@misu.su.se (mailto:johan.nilsson@misu.su.se).
Inquiries about the recruitment process and employment conditions can be directed to Administrative Manager, Sara Engström sara.engstrom@misu.su.se (mailto:sara.engstrom@misu.su.se).
Application
You apply for the position via Stockholm University's recruitment system. Attach a personal letter and CV as well as the documents requested in the application form. You as an applicant are responsible for ensuring that the application is complete and that it is received by the university no later than the application deadline.
