Research Assistant at the Swedish Museum of Natural History

The Swedish Museum of Natural History is a government agency tasked by the government to promote knowledge, research, and interest in our world. The agency is a prominent research institution and the largest museum in Sweden. For over 200 years, the museum has collected objects and data and conducted research on life on Earth. The collections contain more than 11 million plants, animals, fungi, environmental samples, minerals, and fossils. All research and knowledge are shared in exhibitions, Cosmonova, and through activities at the museum and digitally.

The Department of Environmental Analysis and Research is one of Sweden's leading institutions for research and monitoring related to persistent environmental pollutants and their effects on the environment. The department conducts national monitoring of environmental pollutants in aquatic environments on behalf of the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management. The department also houses one of the world's oldest environmental sample banks for biological material preserved for future inquiries, e.g., regarding the development of environmental pollutants over time.

We are now seeking a Research Assistant for the national monitoring of environmental pollutants in marine and limnic environments.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The position involves sample preparation of biological material and administrative work related to it, such as data entry. The material handled mainly consists of fish, eggs, and mussels within the national marine and limnic monitoring programs for environmental pollutants, but there may also be sample preparation of tissue samples from other animal groups for various types of analyses. Fieldwork, in the form of fishing in lakes in different parts of the country, is included in the position and takes place during late summer/early autumn each year.

The position also includes planning and coordinating work together with the team. The work is primarily performed in collaboration with existing staff at the department but also requires the ability to carry out tasks independently. Heavy lifting and work in cold storage rooms are involved. Other tasks within the department may also arise.

QUALIFICATIONS

A completed bachelor's degree in biology or another relevant field, as well as experience that can be deemed equivalent, is required for the position. Good computer skills, proficiency in Swedish in both spoken and written form, and a valid driver's license (category B) with experience in driving are also required.

Knowledge and experience in age determination of fish, data entry, sample preparation of biological material (such as tissue samples from fish, eggs, and mussels), as well as experience in fishing are meritorious.

Other important competencies for the position include:

  • Responsibility - you take responsibility for the collective result and do what needs to be done for the organization to achieve its goals.
  • Flexibility - you can adapt your working methods to changing conditions and act unpretentiously in connection with changes.
  • Attention to detail - you identify and follow up on details in your work, ensuring that nothing is left to chance or overlooked.
  • Collaboration skills - you recognize others' perspectives and expertise and develop relationships.
