Research Position in Nuclear Explosion Detection
FOI, the Total Defence Research Institute, is one of Europe’s leading institutes for applied research in defense and security. FOI is an authority under the Ministry of Defence and is tasked with conducting research, method and technology development, and investigations for total defense and in support of disarmament, non-proliferation, and international security. The activities are carried out on behalf of, primarily, the Government Offices, the Armed Forces, the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), and the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB). At FOI, we have about 1400 employees, of which more than 1000 work directly with research and development. Our competencies span the entire field from natural sciences and technology to social and political sciences.
Would you like to join a knowledgeable team that leads Sweden's research on the detection of nuclear explosions? Do you want to work with applied research? Are you also interested in working with measurements and analysis of radioactivity? Then you could be the perfect candidate for the role of researcher in the nuclear weapon detection unit! Take the next step in your career and contribute to meaningful research and societal benefit.
Then FOI could be your new workplace! We offer a balanced work life, a developing work environment, and a socially important job!
About the Position
In the role of researcher in the detection of nuclear explosions, you will work with analysis and experimental work in radiation detection. Your tasks include the development of existing and future systems for the detection of radioactivity as well as the development of data analysis methods. The scope of work covers the entire chain from source term to reporting to clients. In this role, you will handle various questions related to radiation detection and verification. Monitoring and routine analysis of data from national and international systems may be included in the position. The position involves regular participation in national and international meetings, as we collaborate closely with other countries and international organizations as well as universities and other authorities in Sweden in certain areas. Fieldwork may also be relevant.
The place of employment is Kista, Stockholm. The work involves travel, but not regularly.
About the Unit
You will be part of the Nuclear Weapon Detection unit, which belongs to the CBRN Protection and Security department.
In the unit, we conduct research and development on systems for the detection of both radionuclides and seismo-acoustic signals. We also operate a data center, a network of measurement stations, and are part of the national radiation protection preparedness. The work performed within the unit is for both national needs and internationally, primarily for the verification of nuclear weapon-related agreements.
Within the department's areas of activity, we provide technical expert support to the government, the Government Offices, the Armed Forces, and other relevant authorities within total defense.
