About the position

Clinical Genetics and Genomics is a medical unit belonging to the function Medical Diagnostics Karolinska (MDK). We investigate patients and provide expert knowledge where clinical genetic expertise is necessary. With increased knowledge, genetic investigation is becoming more common within more specialties. Our analyses and investigations are at the forefront of development and contribute to more patients receiving a correct diagnosis. Read more about us here!

At our patient clinic, we investigate, among other things, patients for hereditary cancer, cardiovascular, kidney, eye, and neurological diseases where a genetic cause is being sought. We investigate patients for hereditary dementia and perform syndrome investigations where we investigate children to try to establish a diagnosis. We also investigate pregnant patients and questions regarding prenatal diagnostics.

As a genetic counselor/nurse with us, you map out families with these hereditary diseases in collaboration with clinical geneticists. The work is independent and mainly involves initiating genetic investigations where you, in a first contact with the patient, collect and compile information about the family. This includes creating family trees to try to understand the family history. You are responsible for the patient's investigation from first contact to possibly also answering test results to the patient. The investigations mainly start over the phone but can also take place via video visits or on-site.

You perform orders for analyses, handle referrals, and bookings from the waiting list. The work also includes participating in rounds. At our clinic, in addition to clinical geneticists, nursing assistants and medical secretaries also work.

Other tasks you have in the role as nurse/genetic counselor are:

  • telephone service for the public and patients
  • participation in the production of patient information
  • to educate healthcare personnel as well as provide information and education to the public regarding genetic investigations

We are looking for you who

  • take responsibility for your tasks and independently structure your approach, drive processes forward, and have the courage to act according to your own convictions
  • are confident in professionally interacting with others over the phone since the role includes telephone consultations
  • adapt easily to changed circumstances, can quickly change perspectives and attitudes, and see opportunities in changes
  • work well with other people and relate to them in a listening and smooth way. You listen, communicate, and resolve conflicts constructively
  • plan, organize, and prioritize work in an efficient way. You set and keep timeframes

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • licensed nurse or at least a 3-year university education with relevant professional experience in genetics combined with completed university course in genetic counseling
  • good knowledge of Swedish and English, both spoken and written

Meritorious:

  • work experience in genetic counseling or relevant area such as clinic operations or clinical genetic laboratory operations
  • specialist nurse
  • contact nurse
  • experience in medical research
