We are now looking for a Data Engineer who wants to work with large datasets, complex data flows, and modern technology in a Databricks-based environment.

What you will be part of

You will become part of the KRS team (Customer Counting System), responsible for the systems and data solutions used to measure, analyze, and monitor travel in public transport. The team's work is business-critical for Västtrafik and forms the basis for one of the company's most important key performance indicators – travel volume!

Behind the solution lies an extensive data flow where information from sensors on buses and trams is collected, quality assured, and processed to provide the most accurate picture possible of public transport travel. KRS is one of four teams within BI & Data Analytics at Västtrafik. The teams work towards a common goal and product strategy with close collaboration, shared forums, and active knowledge exchange among colleagues.

Role Description

In the role of Data Engineer, you combine development, analysis, and further development of business-critical data solutions. The work spans the entire chain – from data collection and processing to analysis, monitoring, and improvement of existing solutions. The role suits you if you enjoy hands-on development work. A large part of your day will revolve around code development in Databricks, primarily using Python/PySpark and SQL, to handle and further develop business-critical data flows.

You will work in a complex environment with large datasets, near-real-time flows, and many dependencies between systems, integrations, and external suppliers. The team is characterized by close collaboration where colleagues support each other, share knowledge, and take joint responsibility for delivery. Here you will have the opportunity to:

• Develop, test, and further develop solutions related to the customer counting system
• Build and maintain data flows for large volumes of travel data
• Work with data modeling and structuring of data
• Ensure quality, robustness, and performance in the data solutions
• Improve, optimize, and simplify existing solutions and processes

Technical Environment

The team works in a modern Databricks-based data platform where large amounts of travel data are collected, processed, and made available for analysis and monitoring. The environment is based on Data Lake solutions and includes the development of data flows, integrations, data models, and analytics solutions. The tech stack consists mainly of:

• Databricks, SQL (T-SQL and Spark SQL)
• Python/PySpark
• Power BI & DAX

Qualifications:

• Post-secondary education in systems science, data engineering, IT, or equivalent competence through work experience
• Several years of experience in data engineering, system development, or a similar field
• Very good knowledge of Python/PySpark and SQL
• Experience working in complex IT environments with many integrations and dependencies
• Fluent in Swedish (written and spoken)

It is extra interesting if you also have experience with:

• Modern data platforms such as Databricks, Microsoft Fabric, or Snowflake
• Data modeling, data warehousing, and performance optimization
• Power BI and DAX
• Near-real-time systems, sensor data, or other data-heavy environments
• Complex data flows where information is processed and made available from various sources, for example within traffic, industry, energy, or similar operations
