The University College of Opera, Dance and Drama is located in central Gothenburg and is part of the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts at Gothenburg University. The institution educates musicians in several genres, composers, teachers of music, dance and theatre, musical and performance artists, opera singers and actors, and has over 600 students. The University College of Opera, Dance and Drama also conducts development work, doctoral education and research, and has a comprehensive outreach activity. The institution has nearly 200 employees. Together with our sister institution, HDK-Valand, we are Scandinavia's broadest faculty of the arts.

We are now looking for a University Lecturer in Scenic Design with a focus on Stage Presentation at 30% full-time equivalent.

Subject Description

Scenic Design with a focus on Music Drama/Music Dramatic Design consists of musical, vocal and physical expressions, which together form a scenic whole. Within the subject, skills in music dramatic design based on the music, the scenic action, and the role's intention and inner life are highlighted and developed.

In this specialization, practical opera and musical knowledge and music dramatic character and scene analysis are integrated with skills in vocal technique, musical rehearsal/interpretation, ear training, opera/musical theory, movement, dance, artistic creativity and social competence. The importance of the ensemble, orchestra and conductor for the student's ability to communicate clearly is emphasized and developed. The importance of seeing and understanding the audience's role in the music dramatic narrative also constitutes an important part of the student's holistic view of their future profession. The ability to benefit from the artistic encounter in a complete environment is practiced. Together, the different parts of the education strive towards a coherent artistic music dramatic development in the student. The aim is to give the student tools to work within different forms of music dramatic performing arts, on both smaller and larger opera and musical stages, as well as in various media such as film, TV and radio.

Responsibilities

The position is located within the music dramatic collegium at the institution's performing arts unit. Duties may also occur within other units. Teaching is primarily conducted within the opera programs but may also occur within other programs.

The main responsibilities consist of teaching in basic actor training/methodical basic training and in scenic projects.

In addition, you are expected to be driving the development of the subject both pedagogically and artistically.

Administrative duties also occur, such as admission tests, student reporting, and work with course plans.

Qualifications

Eligibility for employment as a teacher is regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 and Gothenburg University's employment regulations.

Eligible for employment as a University Lecturer within artistic activities is someone who has shown pedagogical skill, and who has completed a doctoral degree in arts or shown artistic skill or has some other professional skill that is significant with regard to the subject content of the employment and the duties that are to be included in the employment.

Evaluation Criteria

The assessment is made based on artistic and pedagogical skill.

Artistic skill is understood to mean that the applicant has:

  • Artistic originality, depth and expressiveness in their own artistic production within opera.
  • A high degree of visibility and recognition in artistic and professional contexts.
  • Quality in research and development work.

Pedagogical skill is understood to mean that the applicant has:

  • Very good pedagogical ability regarding teaching within opera at the university level.
  • Very good pedagogical ability regarding direction within opera at the university level.
  • Documented skill in administration and/or project management, such as taking responsibility for planning, organizing and developing scenic projects. Experience of course development within higher education is meritorious.

At the time of appointment, emphasis will also be placed on the applicant having:

  • Knowledge/skills/competence in artistic development work relevant to the subject area.
  • Good collaboration skills and communication skills.
  • Good knowledge of Swedish and English, both in speech and writing.
  • Good administrative ability.
  • A great interest in and ability to collaborate with other staff and to be involved in the unit's and institution's organization.

We will primarily consider the person who, after a holistic assessment of competence, skill and documented merits, is judged to have the best prerequisites for carrying out current duties and contributing to a positive development of the activity.

Applicants who have not previously completed the pedagogical courses for higher education provided by the university (or equivalent) are expected to do so during the first two years of employment.

Employment

  • Employment: Fixed-term employment for 5 years with the possibility of extension for another 5 years according to HE Ordinance 4 § 10.
  • Scope: 30% of full-time.
  • Start date: 2027-01-01 or as agreed.
  • Location: University College of Opera, Dance and Drama.
