Subject

General Chemistry is one of the fundamental chemistry subjects. The subject area covers basic concepts and principles within the various sub-areas of chemistry, such as atomic and molecular structure, chemical bonding, stoichiometry, thermochemistry, chemical equilibrium, acids and bases, electrochemistry, and basic inorganic chemistry. The subject constitutes a central part of the education for all science and engineering programs at the Department of Chemistry and lays the foundation for further studies in chemistry and related subjects.

Specific Subject Description

Extensive teaching is conducted in the subject of General Chemistry. To ensure continued high quality, there is a clear need to recruit a teaching resource with documented competence in the area.

In addition to teaching, the role includes student academic advising for students at the Faculty of Science.

Responsibilities

As a University Lecturer, you will play an important role in developing and implementing teaching in an stimulating and laboratory-based learning environment. The work combines teaching, supervision, and the development of undergraduate education in close collaboration with colleagues and students.

The role includes:

  • Teaching, supervising, and examining at undergraduate and advanced levels, and actively contributing to the implementation of education through exercises and laboratory supervision.
  • Introducing students to laboratory environments and the use of course instruments.
  • Supervising doctoral students who teach in undergraduate laboratories.
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of course modules, including renewing teaching content and working methods.
  • Participating in collegial collaboration and pedagogical development work.
  • Contributing to a safe, inclusive, and professional learning and working environment where students, doctoral students, and colleagues are treated objectively, respectfully, and equitably.
  • Contributing to administration related to teaching activities.
  • Participating in safety work related to teaching activities.
  • Contributing to ensuring that undergraduate laboratories maintain the correct standard through setup, maintenance, cleaning, and quality follow-up of the laboratory environment.
  • Participating in the work team's joint responsibility for staffing mornings and late afternoons to ensure the laboratory is always staffed.

In the responsibilities involving academic advising, you will:

  • Introduce, support, and advise students individually and in groups.
  • Conduct individual study planning for students requiring pedagogical support in consultation with Student Health Services, Study Workshop, and Pedagogical Student Support at LU.
  • Be responsible for ongoing information to students.
  • Represent the department in networks related to academic advising.
  • Participate in outward-facing activities as a representative of our educational programs.
  • Collaborate with industry and society.
  • Be responsible for study visits and alumni activities.

The distribution of tasks within the work team may change over time.

Qualifications

Eligibility

Eligibility as a University Lecturer requires:

  • A completed advanced degree or equivalent knowledge acquired in another way, as well as other competence that is significant considering the subject orientation of the position and the duties involved.
  • Documented pedagogical skill.
  • Five weeks of university pedagogy education or equivalent knowledge acquired in another way, unless there are special reasons.

Other Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in a relevant subject area.
  • Experience of teaching at the university level, in chemistry-oriented courses within undergraduate education.
  • Good laboratory experience.
  • Very good knowledge of Swedish and English, both spoken and written.
  • Curiosity about pedagogical development and the ability to actively contribute to the renewal of course content, teaching methods, and student-active learning environments.
  • Ability to take responsibility for a safe, inclusive, and ethically sustainable learning environment, especially in laboratory teaching and in contact with students.
  • Good pedagogical empathy, meaning a good ability to see and meet individual needs of students and doctoral students.
  • Clear student focus.
  • Service-oriented and clear in communication.
  • Good collaboration skills.
  • Good initiative-taking ability.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Structured and meticulous.

Evaluation Criteria

When hiring a University Lecturer, the following shall form the basis for assessment:

  • Good subject knowledge relevant to the content of the position and the duties involved.
  • Good pedagogical ability, meaning a good ability to conduct and develop teaching and other pedagogical activities at different levels and with varying teaching methods.
  • Very good professional experience or other experience relevant to the position.

Other Merits:

  • Experience in planning and implementing teaching in a laboratory environment.
  • Experience in developing laboratory-based teaching modules.
  • It is an advantage if you have reviewed the current undergraduate courses offered at the Department of Chemistry.

Consideration will also be given to good collaboration skills, drive, independence, and professional judgment, as well as how the applicant, through their experience and competence, is assessed to complement and strengthen the department and contribute to its future development.
