Workplace Description
The position is located at the Department of Biotechnology and Technical Microbiology, within the Division of Process Technology and Applied Bioscience at Lund Institute of Technology (LTH), Lund University. Here, research and education are conducted within microbiology, bioinformatics, and applied biotechnology.
You will join a research environment with close supervision and collaboration on data-intensive questions regarding the microbiome and antibiotic resistance. The workplace is located at Kemicentrum in Lund, and the work is carried out in close cooperation with researchers with expertise in bioinformatics, microbiology, and computational methods.
The position is funded by an external project from the Crafoord Foundation and aims to establish a new research line regarding the tracking of antimicrobial resistance at the strain level using metagenomics data. The project includes method development, pilot analyses, and benchmarking as a basis for future larger applications.

Tasks and Responsibilities
As a Research Engineer, you will work with processing and quality control of larger metagenomics datasets, run established bioinformatics workflows for the detection of antimicrobial resistance, organize and document analysis workflows, and contribute to pilot analyses, benchmarking, and method development within the project. The work is carried out in close collaboration with the responsible researcher.
Qualifications
Requirements for the position are:
- You have higher education in a relevant subject area, such as bioinformatics, biotechnology, data biology, or a corresponding field.
- You have good ability to communicate in English, both orally and in writing.
- You have good knowledge of bioinformatics, computational biology, or a related field.
- You have experience in the analysis of metagenomics data or related omics data.
- You are analytical, meticulous, self-initiative, and have good collaboration skills.
- You have experience with Linux, scripting, and work in HPC environments.
Qualifications that would be considered an advantage include:
- It is an advantage if you have knowledge of microbiome research, AMR detection, or related bioinformatics tools.
- It is an advantage if you have experience with reproducible analysis workflows, version control, and documentation of pipelines.
- It is an advantage if you have additional education or courses in microbiology, statistics, or data science.
- It is an advantage if you have a clear interest in method development and structured work with large datasets.
- It is an advantage if you have experience with benchmarking bioinformatics methods and working with public sequence databases.
Consideration will be given to how the applicant, through their experience and competence, is assessed to complement and strengthen the administrative work within the department/institution and contribute to its future development.
Other Information
The position is a fixed-term appointment for 6 months with a workload of 100 percent, with immediate effect or as agreed.
The position is tied to an externally funded research project.
The location is at Kemicentrum in Lund.
