University of Gothenburg meets society's challenges with diverse knowledge. With 58,000 students and 6,800 employees, the university is a large and inspiring workplace. Strong research and attractive education attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University of Gothenburg contributes to a better future.

At the Department of Neuroscience and Physiology at the Sahlgrenska Academy, extensive research and teaching are conducted across broad knowledge areas from molecule to human. The department consists of five sections; pharmacology, physiology, health and rehabilitation, clinical neuroscience, and psychiatry and neurochemistry.

At the Neurochemistry Laboratory within the Section of Psychiatry and Neurochemistry, medical neurochemical research is conducted with a focus on understanding the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases. An important goal is to identify protein changes associated with the pathophysiology of human diseases, so-called biochemical markers, which can be used to understand disease mechanisms, for diagnostics, and to monitor the effect of medications in humans.

The Section of Psychiatry and Neurochemistry is now seeking a postdoctoral researcher for research regarding the identification and development of biomarkers for neurodegenerative diseases in cerebrospinal fluid and blood through LC-MS-based proteomics and mass spectrometry with isotope dilution.

Subject

Neurochemistry with a focus on proteomics and biomarkers

Subject Description

Neurodegenerative diseases, especially dementia, are becoming increasingly common as the population ages. The cognitive tests currently used in dementia diagnosis are often too blunt to detect mild cognitive impairment or to distinguish between different neurodegenerative diseases. Although established biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and more recently blood-based biomarkers, exist for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and are routinely used in diagnostics, such markers are still lacking for other conditions. Therefore, we need new markers that reflect different disease mechanisms to enable early and secure diagnosis.

Responsibilities

The position involves performing mass spectrometry-based proteomic analysis of cerebrospinal fluid and plasma using the tandem mass tag (TMT) technique and data-independent analysis (DIA) in cohorts consisting of patients with various neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, frontotemporal dementia, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and Parkinson's diseases. The purpose is to identify protein changes associated with the underlying pathological processes of these diseases.

Furthermore, the role includes developing targeted analysis methods for selected candidate biomarkers using mass spectrometry with isotope dilution (IDMS). The position is also linked to a project aimed at developing a reference method for the biomarker neurofilament light chain (NfL) in plasma.

The duties include sample preparation, LC-MS analysis, data processing, and statistical analysis. The position also involves administrative tasks such as compiling, documenting, and reporting results.

Qualifications

Qualifications for employment as a teacher are regulated in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and the University of Gothenburg's employment regulations.

Eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher is someone who has completed a PhD, an artistic doctorate, or has a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a PhD. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than at the time the employment decision is made.

Preference should be given to those who have completed their degree no more than three years before the application deadline. Those who completed their degree earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, trust positions within trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

Eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher for this position is someone who holds a PhD in biomedicine, neurochemistry, neuroproteomics, or related fields.

Assessment Criteria

The applicant should have research experience in the field of proteomics, biomarkers, and neurological diseases. Knowledge and experience of high-resolution mass spectrometry and bioinformatic analysis of proteomics data are meritorious. Other desirable qualifications include a good ability to process data independently and to coordinate projects and maintain contact with collaboration partners. Great importance will also be attached to personal suitability.

Employment

The employment is for a fixed term of 2 years, 100% full-time, with placement indefinitely at the Department of Neuroscience and Physiology. Start date: ASAP or as agreed.
