Lund University was founded in 1666 and is consistently ranked among the world's leading universities. There are approximately 46,000 students and 8,500 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our strive to understand, explain, and improve our world and people's conditions.
The Department of Process and Energy Engineering (PLE) at Lund University is located at Kemicentrum, one of the largest centers in the Nordics for education and research in the field of chemistry. PLE has approximately 150 employees, of whom about 65 are doctoral students. The department offers broad expertise in areas such as chemical engineering, food technology, biotechnology, and technical microbiology. The research and education at PLE span the entire field of chemistry and include both undergraduate and doctoral education.
The Department of Process and Energy Engineering (PLE) at Lund University actively works to ensure a good working environment through several initiatives and routines. PLE encourages open communication and collaboration between employees, students, and management to continuously improve the working environment. This includes regular meetings and dialogues to discuss working environment issues and find common solutions.
Workplace Description
The advertised doctoral position is located within the CCS group at the Department of Process and Energy Engineering, Division of Chemical Engineering. The CCS group in Lund is well-established and is one of the leading research groups in Sweden in new carbon capture technologies, with both national and international collaborations with industrial partners as well as other universities and research institutes. We offer an excellent workplace and platform for the development and optimization of new processes for carbon dioxide capture, from laboratory scale to pilot scale. More information about the CCS group can be found at: Carbon Capture | Department of Process and Energy Engineering (https://lu.varbi.com/what:job/jobID:947364/).
Subject Description
Carbon Capture and Storage from Biomass (BECCS) is currently a highly relevant area for future industries in Europe, where carbon capture processes are applied to biogenically produced CO₂, for example, at combined heat and power plants. New types of solvents are being developed continuously, and there is great interest in testing these in various industrial applications so that we can achieve climate goals.
The CCS group is currently developing and building a pilot plant for the use of new types of amines in BECCS applications. The pilot plant will be transported to, commissioned, and used at a BECCS plant in northern Italy, where this doctoral position will be partially located. The pilot tests include sampling, operational monitoring, data evaluation, optimization of the operational campaign, and investigation of process integration with the energy systems at the plant in Italy.
The doctoral project is primarily linked to the ongoing project Emissions mitigatioN tHrough cArboN CapturE froM bioENergy and its application in hard to abaTe industry (ENHANCEMENT), which is funded through the EU's Horizon program. The project is part of an international collaboration, with partners such as DABO Engineering, Sintef, SOSVAV, Econotherm, Brunel University, and Unimore.
Job Duties
The main duties of doctoral students are to engage in their research studies, which includes participating in research projects and courses at the doctoral level. The duties also include teaching and other department-related tasks (maximum 10% of working time). Note that this position is primarily located in Lund, Sweden, but the doctoral student will be stationed in northern Italy for 7–10 months during the pilot plant's test campaign to conduct experiments on-site.
