About the workplace

The University of Gävle offers around 60 degree programs and 330 standalone courses within the humanities, healthcare and medicine, social and natural sciences, as well as technology. We have 19,000 students, 750 employees, and a unified campus in beautiful surroundings.

The University has four strategic research areas focusing on societal challenges: Sustainable urban development, health-promoting work, innovative learning, and intelligent industry.

The Division of Nursing Science has approximately 65 employees and is one of three divisions at the Academy of Health and Working Life. We offer education at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels and work to strengthen both nursing science research and interdisciplinary research.

The University of Gävle hereby announces a doctoral study position, 240 ECTS credits, for the project “Can-Work-S: Sustainable work participation among people treated for cancer”, with a PhD in Nursing Science as the final goal.

The overall purpose of the project is to provide research-based knowledge on how sustainable work participation can be measured, how it is valued by people treated for cancer, what effect a work-oriented intervention has on sustainable work participation, and how the implementation processes of the intervention are evaluated. The project will include various research methods with quantitative and qualitative approaches: a methodological study, an observational study, an intervention study with a randomized controlled design, and a process evaluation study. The doctoral student will be admitted to the doctoral program in Nursing Science and the degree-granting area of Health-Promoting Working Life. The doctoral student will be part of an interdisciplinary research environment together with doctoral students from several subjects and will participate in the research group Can-Work-S together with other doctoral students and researchers. The research concerns “Inclusive Working Life”, which is one of the research programs within the strategic research area Health-Promoting Work; the main supervisor is Anna Efverman.

Responsibilities

The person admitted to a study position shall, during the four years the education lasts with a study pace of 100%, primarily devote themselves to conducting the scientific research project and taking courses totaling at least 60 ECTS credits. The education includes the doctoral student writing a scientific compilation thesis equivalent to 180 ECTS credits. The person receiving the study position may also work with teaching and administrative tasks comprising a maximum of 20% of full-time employment, after agreement with the supervisor, which extends the education period by a corresponding amount. The doctoral student is expected to perform the majority of their work in Gävle and regularly participate in the academy's activities such as seminars and meetings; parts of the work can be done remotely.

Qualifications

Basic eligibility for doctoral studies is held by those who have completed an advanced level degree or fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 ECTS credits, of which at least 60 ECTS credits at advanced level, or have acquired equivalent knowledge in other ways within or outside the country. The University may grant an individual applicant an exemption from the requirement for basic eligibility if there are special reasons. To be admitted to doctoral studies in Nursing Science, special eligibility is required, which means that the applicant must have a thesis of at least 15 ECTS credits at advanced level, or equivalent knowledge assessed as comparable. The eligibility must have been achieved no later than the last day of application. For this study position, a degree within healthcare, social care, or human-handling professions relevant to the project is a requirement.

You should have a well-developed ability to work independently and together with others in teams, as well as good communication skills in Swedish and English, both written and oral. As a doctoral student, you should have a desire to seek new knowledge and also be able to discuss and explain the research with people who are not active in the own subject; nationally and internationally.

The selection for a study position is based on the combined assessment of the applicant's ability to benefit from the education. The selection procedure is based on the following assessment criteria:

  • formal eligibility for admission to doctoral studies
  • relevance and scope of educational background
  • quality of the application
  • quality of the applicant's essays, theses, or equivalent
  • experience of research-related work, regarding both quantity and content and/or other work experience relevant to the doctoral studies
  • competence and focus in relation to the specific study position
  • ability to benefit from doctoral studies based on submitted documents, interview, and possibly work tests/tests
  • ability to contribute to the scientific environment where the doctoral studies will take place
  • judgment from references

However, the fact that an applicant is assessed to be able to have previous education or professional activity credited for the education must not, in selection, give the applicant preference over other applicants, HF Chapter 7 Section 41.
