Department of Blood and Cancer Diseases

We are Akademiska Sjukhuset – one of Sweden's leading university hospitals. As a county hospital and provider of highly specialized care, we offer healthcare to two million people in Central Sweden. Something is always happening here – a new life is born, a grandmother undergoes surgery, a colleague is hailed as a hero. Here, you will experience both tough challenges and fantastic events, within a strong community of colleagues. We welcome your application!

Are you a nursing student interested in working in hematology when you have completed your education and graduated as a nurse? We offer you, who are starting term 6 of the nursing program and choose to start your career with us after completing your studies, the opportunity to apply for a study salary during your final term (term 6).

Our Operations

On Hematology Ward 101A, we care for patients with blood diseases, such as leukemia and myeloma. Here, highly specialized care is provided with a focus on both medical quality and person-centered nursing.

We take care of patients throughout the entire care pathway – from investigation to intensive treatment and, for some patients, blood stem cell transplantation or CAR T-cell therapy. Stem cell transplantation is one of our specialist areas, and we are accredited according to the European quality assurance standard JACIE.

The work is varied and medically advanced. You will work with central lines, cytostatics, immunotherapy, anti-infective medications, and blood component transfusions. It also includes monitoring and assessing patients in connection with advanced treatments.

At the same time, nursing care is a central part of the job. We support patients and their relatives throughout the entire care process. Many treatments last for several weeks and recur over time, which means we get to know our patients well and follow them through large parts of their treatment journey.

We work in multidisciplinary teams where nurses, assistant nurses, doctors, and other professions collaborate closely. Thanks to the specialized care, we have a high nurse-to-patient ratio, and you will have an experienced nurse as a supervisor during your first year.

The JACIE accreditation means that we work systematically with clear guidelines and checklists for all procedures. This creates security for you as a nurse, contributes to safe care for the patients, and gives us good conditions to continuously develop and improve our operations.

We are looking for you who

  • Are a nursing student starting term 6 this year.
  • Are interested in hematology and want to start working on Hematology Ward 101A after completing your degree.
  • Are responsible, flexible, and have good collaboration skills.

We offer

  • Permanent employment as an assistant nurse. Upon submission of your license, the employment will be converted to a permanent position as a nurse. Your new position will involve full-time work with rotation between day, evening, and night shifts. Night shift rotation occurs only after you have become comfortable in your role and after dialogue with the manager.
  • You commit to working for us for 12 months after completing your degree.
  • There is an opportunity to work as an assistant nurse or nursing assistant during your studies, but this is not a requirement.

When the position is converted to a nurse, you will receive:

  • A personalized introduction of approximately five weeks, following the department's introduction and training program.
  • Follow-up with the deputy ward manager and education nurse during the introduction period.
  • Full-day training in hematology during your first period with us.
  • Weekly medical lectures on disease pathology and treatments.
  • A workplace with a high nurse-to-patient ratio.
  • A dedicated work team where we help each other, learn from each other, and maintain a positive atmosphere.
  • Opportunities for further competence development, including through the Cancer Care Academy and the possibility of paid specialist training.

With us, you receive benefits that make a difference; read about the benefits here (https://regionuppsala.se/formaner/ (https://regionuppsala.se/formaner/)).

Why you should choose us

On Hematology Ward 101A, you will have the opportunity to work with cutting-edge advanced medicine, develop your competence and clinical eye, and be part of a dedicated team where we support each other and develop together.
We believe in the power of teamwork, curiosity, and the courage to constantly develop – and we hope you want to do it together with us.
