Do you want to work for a government agency where language and culture are at the center, and where the revitalization of national minority languages is the focus? The Institute for Language and Folklore is now looking for a Language Promoter in Meänkieli with a focus on children and young people for the Department of National Minority Languages and Swedish Sign Language.

The Institute for Language and Folklore (Isof) is a state agency that builds and disseminates knowledge about language and culture in Sweden. Isof is responsible for the Language Centre for Finnish, Yiddish, Meänkieli, and Romani, which aims to promote increased use of these languages, strengthen individuals' conditions for reclaiming the languages, spread knowledge about language revitalization, and work with language care. Initiatives targeting children and young people are given special priority. The Language Centre's work should be based on the language bearers' needs for revitalization efforts and take place in dialogue with the language bearers. We are looking for you who, in collaboration with language bearers, want to drive the work of promoting the use of Meänkieli in Sweden with a focus on children and young people.

The Role

You will work at the Department of National Minority Languages and Swedish Sign Language. The department is responsible for, among other things, language care and language promotion initiatives, develops language models, follows language political issues, and prepares decisions on the distribution of state grants for initiatives supporting the national minority languages.

The duties include planning and implementing language promotion initiatives, developing methodological support and informational materials, counseling and knowledge dissemination, and collaboration with relevant actors. The role also involves collecting text- and speech-based material for the preservation and development of the language, as well as for Isof's work on corpus building and the development of language models.

Your Background

We are looking for you who have an academic degree and studies in Meänkieli equivalent to at least upper secondary school level. You have good knowledge of Meänkieli and Swedish, both spoken and written, as well as good knowledge of the national minority's culture and the different varieties of Meänkieli.

To succeed in the role, you need experience working in public administration and in the revitalization of national minority languages. You also have pedagogical experience, preferably from teaching Meänkieli, and experience in cultural pedagogical activities.

Furthermore, you have good computer skills, experience in project management, collaboration, and network building within the language field, as well as experience in collecting and documenting text- and speech-based material in Meänkieli.

It is meritorious if you have academic studies in Meänkieli and very good writing skills in the language. We also view positively experience working with issues concerning national minorities and minority languages, as well as an active network within the national minority, especially with a focus on children and young people.

Experience in communication work and familiarity with adapting messages for different target groups and channels is also meritorious.

We are looking for you who have good pedagogical and communicative skills and who find it easy to build trusting relationships. You are proactive, flexible, and have an easy time contacting different people and actors.

To succeed in the role, you need to be able to work independently and take responsibility for your tasks, while also enjoying teamwork. You work in a structured and meticulous manner, drive the work forward, and have the ability to deliver according to set goals and schedules.

Other Information

The position is a permanent full-time position (100%). Probationary period may apply. Start date: 2026-09-01 or by agreement. The role involves regular business trips to, among other places, various administrative municipalities for Meänkieli, and the workplace is in Stockholm.
