The Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering (SBN) is one of our departments at Luleå University of Technology. Within the department, there is a division for Building Construction and Fire Safety. To strengthen our research activities and teaching competence, we are now seeking a researcher in Fire Safety Engineering with a focus on in-situ computed tomography of fire-exposed timber.

Subject Description

Fire Safety Engineering encompasses research on technologies and processes relevant to fires and explosions, as well as related research on risk management and societal safety.

Project Description

You will work within a new and dynamic research group. The current project deals with the delamination of timber products, such as CLT (Cross-Laminated Timber) and glulam, when exposed to fire.

Responsibilities

As a researcher, you will contribute to the development of research activities within the field of Fire Safety Engineering. The work will focus on the development of in-situ tomography of fire-exposed joined timber products. Other fire testing, such as cone calorimetry, may also be included in the tasks, as well as some degree of modeling. You will also participate in teaching by acting as a teacher in timber and fire-related courses and supervising master's theses.

Qualifications

To be eligible for the position of researcher, a PhD in Wood Technology or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a PhD is required.

The following are requirements:

  • Experience with in-situ tomography of fire-exposed timber
  • Research experience in fire retardant treatment of timber and its durability
  • Very good command of English

The following are meritorious:

  • Good ability to collaborate in a group
  • Good ability to write research grant applications
  • Good knowledge of Fire Safety Engineering

The position of researcher is a fixed-term appointment, full-time, for one year. Location: Luleå, with a start date in September 2026, or as agreed.
