Do you want to develop your research and teaching in an environment where collaboration with industry and society is second nature? Here, you will work with dedicated colleagues, have access to modern research infrastructure, and enjoy excellent opportunities to attract external funding. You will have the space to make a real difference for your students, your research, and society at large.

The Department of Systems and Space Technology (SRT) contributes to the development of the emerging field of neuromorphic technology for next-generation intelligent systems and AI. This technology is guided by the structure and function of biological nervous systems to achieve high energy efficiency, scalability, and performance. The Machine Learning (ML) group at SRT is now seeking outstanding researchers who can contribute to our growing activities in this area. The ML group conducts fundamental and application-driven research in machine learning for the long-term welfare of society. To strengthen our operations, we are now recruiting an outstanding researcher in neuromorphic computing, with a special focus on the following areas:

  • Modeling and optimization of physically instantiated neuromorphics
  • AI-driven co-design of neuromorphic hardware, algorithms, and software
  • Sensor-neuromorphic AI for high energy efficiency, fast response time, and high reliability
  • Bio-inspired algorithms for efficient inference and learning

Subject Description

Machine learning focuses on methods by which computer systems use data to improve their own performance, understanding, and ability to make concrete predictions, and has close ties to applications.

Responsibilities

As an Assistant Professor, you will work with teaching, research, and pedagogical development. You will follow international developments within the subject area and supervise doctoral students.

The role also includes:

  • leading and developing research projects
  • actively seeking external research funding
  • publishing and communicating research results in scientific contexts
  • being active in the national and international research community
  • contributing to operational development and participating in management and administrative tasks

You will collaborate with researchers within the PHINDER project as well as with academic and industrial partners within Neuromorphic Sweden and the international MODE Collaboration network.

The position offers good opportunities to develop your independence as a researcher and qualify you for future teaching positions with higher eligibility requirements.

Eligibility

To meet the requirements for appointment as an Assistant Professor, the applicant must:

  • hold a PhD degree, or have a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a PhD

Assessment Criteria

The following assessment criteria apply to the position:

  • scientific skill
  • other assessment criteria

Other assessment criteria (in order of priority):

  • A university degree in technical physics and/or electrical engineering, or equivalent, is meritorious.
  • In-depth knowledge and documented experience of both basic and applied research in neuromorphic technology and spiking neural networks, demonstrated through publications in leading conferences or scientific journals.
  • Experience working with event-based data or neuromorphic sensors, as well as experiments with neuromorphic hardware and development of spiking neural networks.
  • International research experience, including interdisciplinary collaborations and mobility.
  • Good pedagogical skill and experience in being responsible for course modules, including planning, implementation, and follow-up. Has also contributed to course development in collaboration with colleagues and conducted and assessed oral examinations.
  • Experience working as an independent researcher, including:

- seeking and obtaining external funding for research and/or development projects in competition

- holding various roles in research projects

Priority will be given to candidates who have obtained their PhD degree no more than five years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, the PhD degree may have been obtained earlier. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, clinical service, trust-based positions, or similar circumstances.
