Responsibilities

The postdoctoral researcher will be part of the EU project "Digitising Smell: From Natural Statistics of Olfactory Perceptual Space to Digital Transmission of Odors". The project aims to digitize the sense of smell and lay the groundwork for understanding how olfaction works in humans, as well as to develop AI models capable of simulating olfactory experiences.

The research will focus on processing and developing representation models for various data sources, including time-series data (EEG, video, mass spectrometry), text, images, and chemical data (molecular graphs, SMILES strings) related to odor stimuli.

Requirements

• A completed PhD degree or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a PhD. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.

Merits

• Three years or less since the completion of a PhD or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a PhD on the last day of application.
• Research experience with deep learning architectures (e.g., transformers, diffusion models, graph neural networks) applied to multimodal data.
• Proven expertise in time-series modeling (EEG, video, sensor data) and chemical/structural data representation (e.g., graphs, SMILES strings, molecular embeddings).
• Experience with multimodal representation learning and integration of heterogeneous data sources.
• Experience in signal processing and statistical modeling of high-dimensional data.
• Strong programming skills in Python and relevant ML frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX).
• Documented ability to work in interdisciplinary teams combining machine learning, neuroscience, and chemistry.
• Excellent communication skills and teamwork abilities.
• Motivation and commitment to research work is a very strong merit.
• Experience in teaching and supervision is an advantage.

About the Position

The employment is permanent, but for a maximum of two years.

A postdoctoral position is a time-limited qualifying appointment with a main focus on research, intended as a first career step after the doctoral degree.
