Assistant Professor in Electrical Engineering with a focus on Digital Integrated Circuits and Systems

The Department of Electrical and Information Technology at LTH, Lund University, is recruiting an Assistant Professor.

Workplace Description

The appointment is within the Division of Integrated Electronics Systems (IES) at the Department of Electrical and Information Technology (EIT). IES has for a long time conducted high-quality research and teaching within integrated circuits (IC) and systems. Research activities include – but are not limited to – wireless communication, signal measurement, energy-efficient computer systems, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML), which has led to many collaborations with industry and other research institutes. Most of our research projects are industry-oriented and applied, and our doctoral students are a sought-after resource both in academia and industry.

The area of employment is linked to the strategic research area in IT and mobile communication, ELLIIT (elliit.se). ELLIIT in Lund is part of the profile area Pillars for AI and Digitalization, and the position aligns with LTH's overarching research strategy. The department has three competence centers related to circuit design and wireless systems: ClassIC, Nextg2Com, and ACT, which offer a dynamic and collaboration-oriented research environment.

Data systems and chips are the backbone of a sustainable digitalization of industry and society. Future wireless systems and AI/ML applications place strict requirements regarding performance, energy efficiency, flexibility, and scalability. Energy- and performance-optimized digital circuits and systems are indispensable for meeting the high requirements at the system level. Therefore, EIT intends to hire an Assistant Professor specialized in digital IC and system design for, but not limited to, the aforementioned applications.

Subject

Electrical Engineering with a focus on digital integrated circuits and systems.

Specific Subject Description

This appointment has a particular focus on domain-specific processors, accelerators, multichip/chiplet architectures, advanced circuits and systems (VLSI), and/or digital IC implementation. The subject also includes co-optimization of system and circuit design to achieve overall, balanced solutions between, for example, system performance and energy efficiency.

Job Duties

An appointment as an Assistant Professor is a qualifying appointment aimed at enabling the holder to develop their independence as a researcher and educator. The duties primarily involve research and teaching. As part of the appointment, the opportunity for five weeks of university pedagogy education will be provided.

The duties include:

• Research within the subject area.
• Teaching at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels.
• Supervision of degree project students and doctoral students.
• Work on applying for external research funding.
• Collaboration with business and society.
• Administration related to the above duties.

Qualifications

Eligible for appointment as an Assistant Professor is one who has completed a doctoral degree or achieved equivalent scientific competence.

Preference should be given to those who have completed a doctoral degree or achieved equivalent competence no more than seven years prior to the end of the application period. However, those who have completed a doctoral degree or achieved equivalent competence earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances.

Evaluation Criteria

When appointing an Assistant Professor, the following shall form the basis for assessing eligibility:

• Good ability to develop and conduct high-quality research.
• Pedagogical ability.

Other Requirements

• Very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written.
• Significant documented research experience (e.g., from postdoc or doctoral studies) from another university/institute or relevant experience from industry/public sector.
• Documented research activities within the design and implementation of digital circuits and systems.
• Experience in digital IC design and implementation, computational and processor architecture, as well as circuit and system design for applications such as wireless systems and/or AI/ML.
• The duties require that you comply with US export restrictions (EAR).
• Good teamwork skills, initiative, ability to solve tasks independently, and demonstrated interest in leadership.

Other Merits

• Documented experience in supervising students at various levels.

About the Appointment

The appointment is fixed-term for 6 years and is full-time. The appointment is fixed-term according to Chapter 4, Section 12a of the Higher Education Ordinance. The purpose of the appointment is to give the teacher the opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher and qualify both scientifically and pedagogically to meet the requirements for eligibility for an appointment as a Professor.
