The department's work includes teacher education and research on education, the teaching profession, teaching and learning, as well as development work relevant to school operations. Gothenburg University is seeking a doctoral student with a subject didactics focus on mathematics for the BEPPE doctoral school, admitted to the doctoral subject Subject Didactics with specializations or Pedagogical Work.

Doctoral School on Subject Didactic Models in the Earlier Stages of Compulsory School (BEPPE)

The BEPPE doctoral school aims to contribute to more systematic knowledge about how some scientifically established, but mutually different, subject didactic models function in different subjects and school contexts, and how they can be integrated into teacher education and compulsory school grades F-6. This means that as a doctoral student, you will research concrete teaching in the earlier years of compulsory school, with close connections to teacher education and school practice.

The doctoral school is arranged jointly by Karlstad University and Gothenburg University, with a total of nine doctoral students.

Research Environments

An important part of the research is to contribute to theory and practice development in schools and teacher education. As a doctoral student, you will be attached to one of these specific subject didactic research environments.

Phenomenography, variation theory, and learning study focus, for example, on how students' opportunities to learn specific subject content can be improved. Job Responsibilities

As a doctoral student, you will primarily focus on your own doctoral studies. The doctoral education, which consists of 240 higher education credits (hp) for a PhD and 120 hp for a Licentiate degree, is an opportunity for paid studies combined with work and a chance to start an academic career. As a doctoral student, you work independently and are willing to contribute in various ways to the subject's and the department's work and development. You will have the opportunity to deepen your areas of interest together with others. With agreement, it may become relevant to participate in teaching and administration, so-called departmental service. Such work can comprise a maximum of 20% of full working hours. The work as a doctoral student gives you great freedom to plan and organize your work, which requires, among other things, commitment, drive, and the ability to structure the work to successfully complete a dissertation. To contribute to a good working environment and support both the operations and your own development as a researcher, you are present and actively participate in the daily work and community.
