Subject Description
The area of evidence-based practice has been shaped by a multitude of actors who have developed methods for determining the best available knowledge and sometimes also the best ways to implement evidence-based interventions. The Master's programme Evidence-Based Practice: Theory and Context (H2EVI, 60/120 credits) is designed to provide competence in a range of these methods and tools. Questions of interest include what is meant by scientific knowledge and what significance expertise, standards, and different forms of professional and other practices have for knowledge formation at the intersection of academic disciplines, authorities, organisations, and other societal actors. The education also supports students in using philosophy of science to problematise the use of these methods and tools in different contexts.
Philosophy of science encompasses teaching and research regarding the social, political, historical, and cultural contexts of science, with theoretical and methodological resources often drawn from post-positivist philosophy of science and the research field of Science and Technology Studies (STS).
Job Responsibilities
The responsibilities for this position as University Lecturer or Senior Lecturer involve teaching on the Master's programme Evidence-Based Practice: Theory and Context (60/120 credits), specifically on modules concerning quantitative and qualitative systematic reviews in accordance with the working methods of recognised actors, as well as quality improvement according to models within improvement science.
The substitute University Lecturer/Senior Lecturer should not only maintain, but also improve the programme's quality over time, to make it more attractive to students. The lecturer should also contribute to students developing an understanding of philosophy of science within the area of evidence-based practice. Teaching in the subject of philosophy of science may also occur.
In some cases, study administrative tasks may also be included.
The teaching is primarily conducted online, mainly in Swedish. The courses are scheduled for the autumn term 2026–27.
Qualifications
Eligibility for employment as a teacher is regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 and Gothenburg University's employment regulations, which can be found here: https://www.gu.se/om-universitetet/organisation/styrdokument (https://www.gu.se/om-universitetet/organisation/styrdokument) under Personnel Handling Regulations.
Eligible for employment as a University Lecturer is someone who has completed a doctoral degree and has demonstrated pedagogical skill, or has equivalent scientific competence or other skill that is significant with regard to the subject content of the employment and the tasks to be included in the employment.
Eligible for employment as a Senior Lecturer is someone who has demonstrated pedagogical skill, has completed higher education at least at an advanced level, or has equivalent competence or other skill that is significant with regard to the subject content of the employment and the tasks to be included in the employment.
Evaluation Criteria
When assessing applicants, primary importance will be attached to pedagogical skill, followed by research merits. Administrative experience as well as experience of external collaboration are meritorious. Evaluation criteria for employment as a teacher are stated in Chapter 4, Section 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance (see link above) as well as Gothenburg University's own employment regulations.
Documented pedagogical skill is central to the ability to perform the tasks. Documented ability to plan, conduct, evaluate, and develop teaching, including supervision, both independently and in collaboration with others, especially in areas directly related to the main tasks of the employment, is meritorious, as is documented ability for varied pedagogical working methods and the ability to conduct pedagogical development work.
Competence in quantitative and qualitative systematic reviews as conducted by SBU, Public Health Agency of Sweden, Cochrane, EPPI Centre, and other recognised actors is also important, as is quality improvement according to improvement science models for problem analysis (e.g., problem tree tools), change planning (e.g., programme theory), and follow-up.
Good ability to handle statistical analysis is a merit. To support students' understanding of the philosophical aspects of evidence-based practice, competence in philosophy of science is also a merit. Employment in activities that perform systematic reviews or improvement work is also meritorious.
