Viscaria is facing something unusual in today's mining industry – restarting an underground mine from scratch. The copper mine in Kiruna is now to be put into operation under new management, and the company is in an expansion phase where both the facility and working methods are being built up in parallel.

Senior staff are already in place, with a clear ambition to build a technically strong organization from the ground up, where competence and experience have a significant impact on how the business is shaped.

The mine is expected to be in production within two years, and the rock mechanics group – which belongs to the Mining Department – will be a central part of this work.

About the role and the team

You will become part of the rock mechanics group, which is currently being built up. The group works broadly within both rock technology and rock mechanics, with a clear responsibility to develop, refine, and implement the working methods required for safe and efficient production.

The role involves operational and technical responsibility, where you will work with:

  • Mapping and damage mapping underground
  • Developing rock reinforcement instructions
  • Analysis and optimization of mining sequences, including understanding the mechanical behavior of the rock
  • Numerical and analytical calculations

The work takes place in close collaboration with both engineers and production, where you contribute to ensuring that technical decisions are of high quality while also being practically feasible.

An important part of the assignment is also to help establish routines and structures – and then ensure they work in reality. This means you not only develop methodology but also follow up, adjust, and adapt it based on how the business actually develops.

Your daily work

The work is characterized by variety. Some periods involve more analytical work with models and long-term calculations, while other situations require quick interventions related to production. The mine will be operated around the clock, meaning the work is closely linked to a business that is always running.

The organization is at a stage where the pace is high and resources are focused on building up the business, which means you are expected to be able to take responsibility and step into the work independently.

Requirements for the position

  • MSc in Civil Engineering in Civil Engineering (Road and Water), with a focus on earth and rock construction or equivalent rock mechanics specialization
  • At least eight years of experience working within rock mechanics
  • Good ability to work with both analytical calculations and practical applications
  • Fluent Swedish in speech and writing (technical level) and good knowledge of English
  • Valid driver's license (Category B)

It is meritorious if you have experience from larger infrastructure or mining projects where you have had independent technical responsibility.

Personal qualities

The role requires both structure and adaptability. You need to thrive in an environment where conditions can change quickly and where there are not always ready-made answers. Therefore, we look for someone who:

  • Has the ability to switch between long-term analytical work and operational interventions
  • Is a creative problem solver who can identify several possible paths forward
  • Has a holistic perspective, while being able to go down to the detail level when needed

About our client

Viscaria offers an opportunity to work at a stage where much is still being shaped. This means significant responsibility, but also a real opportunity to influence both technology, working methods, and results. The organization is characterized by a flat structure with short decision-making paths, where you work close to decision-makers and quickly see the effect of your work in the business.

What distinguishes the role is primarily the context – being part of starting up an underground mine is unusual, and offers the opportunity to work broadly and develop competence in several areas of rock mechanics rather than becoming narrow in a single function.
