About the Department

The position is within the Graphics Group (graphics.cs.lth.se (https://graphics.cs.lth.se)), which is part of the Department of Computer Science. The Graphics Group has a long history of internationally recognized research in the areas of Real-Time Rendering, Graphics Hardware, and Ray Tracing. The group collaborates both internationally and locally, with both industry and universities, particularly with a long-standing partnership with the Nvidia Graphics Research group in Lund.

The Department of Computer Science has a broad range of research spanning empirical research in software engineering, software development in programming languages and tools, artificial intelligence, robotics, natural language processing, embedded systems, and theoretical computer science.

Being a PhD Student

As a PhD student, you are both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University. As a doctoral student, you are trained in a scientific approach. This can be briefly described as gaining practice in critical and analytical thinking, solving problems independently using appropriate methods, and developing research ethics awareness. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to work on projects, develop your leadership skills, and enhance your pedagogical abilities. Throughout your studies, you will be guided by supervisors. Doctoral studies conclude with a dissertation and a doctoral degree.

Subject Description

This project aims to develop new algorithms for neural rendering for computer graphics and real-time rendering. By using ANNs coded for high performance on GPUs from various vendors, we aim to create new techniques for global illumination and material models. The subject involves GPU programming using graphics APIs and programming languages for neural accelerators. This project is part of the ELLIIT Excellence Center.

Responsibilities

You will primarily focus on your doctoral education, which includes participation in research projects as well as doctoral education courses, seminars, and conferences. The responsibilities also include teaching and other departmental work (max 20% of the working time).

Qualifications

Eligibility Requirements

To be admitted and employed as a PhD student, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Completed a master's degree or
  • Completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level or
  • Acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.

The requirements for specific eligibility for computer science are met by those who have:

  • At least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level relevant to the subject area, or
  • A master's degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, information and communication technology, engineering physics, or engineering mathematics

Other Requirements

To benefit from the current doctoral education, the following is also required:

  • Good ability for independent work and the ability to formulate and tackle scientific problems.
  • Good ability for written and oral communication
  • Good collaborative skills
  • Good knowledge of English, both spoken and written
  • Experience in C/C++ and GPU programming (CUDA, DX, Vulkan)

Meritorious

The following are meritorious for the current doctoral education:

  • Experience in Real-Time Rendering
  • Experience in Deep Learning
  • Familiarity with contemporary research in computer graphics.

About the Employment

The position is a fixed-term full-time employment, starting as soon as possible by agreement, but no later than 2026-12-15. The doctoral education is four years for full-time studies. If teaching and other departmental work are included, the employment is extended accordingly. Regulations regarding employment as a PhD student are found in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), Chapter 5, Sections 1-7.
