Lund University was founded in 1666 and is consistently ranked as one of the world's leading universities. We have approximately 46,000 students and 8,500 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our pursuit to understand, explain, and improve our world and the conditions of people.
Description of the Department
The Department of Building and Environmental Technology comprises several divisions, one of which is the Division of Fire Safety Engineering. The department conducts research and teaching related to society's needs for infrastructure and construction. As part of this, it includes consideration of safety aspects and the development of methods to handle the consequences of fires and other similar accidents in society.
Research in fire safety engineering covers physical and chemical processes associated with the ignition, growth, spread, and extinguishment of fires; interactions between fire and buildings, facilities, natural resources, etc.; systems to prevent or detect fires or limit their consequences; as well as evacuation and human behavior during fires. The aim is to find cost-effective, sustainable, and innovative methods to keep damage to people, the environment, and property at an acceptable level.
Work is usually carried out in smaller research groups linked to a specific subject area. However, the work is also characterized by an interdisciplinary approach with collaboration across subject boundaries and with colleagues in other divisions within the university. The Division of Fire Safety Engineering consists of about 20 researchers, doctoral students, and administrative staff. Most have their workplace in Lund, but some also work from other locations, e.g., from Campus Helsingborg.
The working environment is characterized by engagement, collaboration, creativity, and personal responsibility. We strive for a non-hierarchical and inclusive working environment with an equal gender distribution. The tasks are varied and stimulating, and there are good opportunities for professional development.
Being a Doctoral Student
As a doctoral student, you are both admitted as a student and employed by Lund University.
As a research student, you are trained in a scientific approach. Briefly, this means you practice critical and analytical thinking, solve problems independently with the right methodological choices, and gain research ethical awareness. Furthermore, you have the opportunity to work on projects, develop your leadership skills, and your pedagogical ability. Throughout your studies, you are guided by supervisors. The research studies conclude with a dissertation and a doctoral degree.
More about being a doctoral student at LTH can be found at lth.se.
Subject and Project Description
The doctoral position focuses on the area of evacuation during emergencies and uses techniques such as Virtual Reality (VR) and physiological measurements as experimental methods. The position specifically involves the development, use, and testing of VR tools and physiological measurements for studies of human behavior in various evacuation scenarios. This includes both the development of multisensory VR scenarios and testing of these for evacuation and behavior studies. The research is conducted in connection with the Helsingborg Safety Hub, located at Lund University's Campus Helsingborg.
Responsibilities
You will primarily devote yourself to your doctoral education, which includes participation in research projects as well as doctoral courses, seminars, and conferences. The responsibilities may also include participation in teaching and other departmental work (maximum 20% of working time). You are also expected to participate in national and international conferences to present and discuss your research with others in the field.
Qualifications
To be admitted and employed as a doctoral student, you must meet the requirements below.
General Eligibility Requirements
General eligibility for education at the doctoral level is met if you have:
- completed a degree at the advanced level, or
- completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits are at the advanced level, or
- acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.
Specific Eligibility Requirements for Fire Safety Engineering
Specific eligibility for Fire Safety Engineering is met if you have:
- a fire engineering education comprising 210 higher education credits, or
- a degree at the advanced level within a relevant subject area.
