Founded in 1666, Lund University is consistently ranked as one of the world's leading universities. With approximately 46,000 students and 8,500 employees across Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö, we are united in our pursuit to understand, explain, and improve our world and the human condition.

The Department of Structural Mechanics at the Faculty of Engineering (LTH) invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor in Solid Mechanics with a focus on computation-driven design of metamaterials and structures regarding multiphysics.

About the Workplace

The Department of Structural Mechanics at LTH seeks an Assistant Professor in Solid Mechanics specializing in computation-driven design of metamaterials and structures with a focus on multiphysics.

This is a six-year tenure-track position offering strong institutional support, mentorship, and a clear career path.

Are you a driven researcher at the beginning of your career looking to build an independent academic path? We welcome applicants with research interests in multiphysical constitutive modeling, numerical methods for multiphysics problems, and the development of numerical optimization methods for the virtual design of metamaterials and structures.

Do you want to become part of a dynamic research environment at Lund University, with close ties to research facilities such as the European Spallation Source (ESS) and MAX IV, as well as access to advanced infrastructure including the 4D Imaging Lab for X-ray tomography, computational resources, and laboratory resources for experimental mechanics?

The Division of Solid Mechanics conducts research in constitutive modeling, non-linear numerical methods, structural optimization, coupled problems, and experimental mechanics, with applications to metals, polymers, fiber materials, and granular materials. Numerical methods, such as the finite element method, form the foundation of much of our research, with significant development of material models to capture micromechanical phenomena. Experimental mechanics is closely linked to modeling and includes advanced neutron- and X-ray-based methods.

This position offers excellent opportunities to establish a research group, lead pioneering projects, and collaborate across disciplines. In addition to research and supervision of doctoral students, the role includes teaching and supervision of thesis projects at the Division of Solid Mechanics. We aim to attract future research leaders with international experience and a strong interest in shaping the future of computation-driven design and multiphysical modeling.

Subject

Solid Mechanics

Specific Subject Description

This recruitment concerns research and doctoral supervision within Solid Mechanics, focusing on computation-driven design of metamaterials regarding multiphysics. Research will focus on multiphysical constitutive modeling, development of numerical methods to solve multiphysics problems, and numerical optimization methods for the virtual design of structures. Special emphasis is placed on non-linear problems, topology optimization, and shape optimization.
