We are now seeking a PhD candidate in medical science.

Your responsibilities

As a PhD candidate, you will focus on your doctoral education and the research projects you are involved in. Your work may also include teaching or participating in other departmental duties, up to 20% of full-time.

As a PhD candidate, you will work on a project aimed at understanding the consequences of DNA break induction. You will combine advanced methods in genetic manipulation with survival analyses, fluorescence-based techniques in fixed and live cells, single-cell sequencing, and computational bioinformatics to induce DNA breaks, track their occurrence, and investigate their repair outcomes.

The position includes a mandatory research stay abroad for at least three months.

Your qualifications

You have a master's degree in molecular biology, biotechnology, or completed courses amounting to at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level, or have acquired equivalent knowledge in another way.

You should be proficient in both spoken and written English, possess excellent communication skills, and have experience working in teams.

Your application should include a motivation letter describing your research interests and competencies, as well as a CV. Previous knowledge in genome stability and CRISPR/Cas9 methodology is required.

Additionally, you should have experience in:

• Research in molecular biology at the university level
• Culture of mammalian cells
• Transfection and transduction of mammalian cells
• Generation and immortalization of MEFs
• DNA extraction from cells and animal tissues
• DNA amplification and detection using PCR
• Immunohistochemistry
• Isolation of sensory neurons

The following work experiences are also considered advantageous:

• Mouse handling techniques
• Behavioral tests on rodents

Your workplace

Your workplace will be 75% at the Department of Molecular Medicine and Virology (MMV) and 25% at the Center for Social and Affective Neuroscience (CSAN), both at the Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences (BKV). MMV and CSAN conduct research and undergraduate and doctoral education in Health and Medical Science.

About the employment

Upon taking up the position, you will be admitted to the doctoral program. Your employment as a PhD candidate will be processed in conjunction with your admission to the doctoral program. Read more about each faculty's doctoral education here.

The employment is limited to four years full-time. Initially, you will be employed for one year, and thereafter the employment will be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time, based on the achieved study plan. Extension of employment up to five years can occur based on the degree of teaching and departmental duties. In special cases, further extensions may be granted.
