We are now looking for a PhD candidate in medical science.

Your tasks

As a PhD candidate, you will engage in your doctoral education and the research projects you are part of. Your work may also include teaching or participating in other departmental assignments, up to 20% of full-time.

As a PhD candidate, you will work on a project aimed at understanding the consequences of telomere protection in normal and malignant cells, at both cellular and molecular levels. At the cellular level, you will investigate the fate of cells experiencing telomere dysfunction. At the molecular level, your work will explore key aspects of telomere dysfunction, including DNA end processing, chromatin dynamics, and repair outcomes. The research will be experimental in nature and will include cell culture, genetic manipulations, analysis of genomic rearrangements, telomere analyses, and RNA sequencing. Activities will include literature review, laboratory work, and computational bioinformatics analysis.

Your qualifications

You have completed a master's degree in molecular biology, biotechnology, or have finished courses totaling at least 240 ECTS credits, of which at least 60 ECTS credits at the advanced level, or have acquired equivalent knowledge in another way. Candidates expected to graduate before September 2026 will be considered.

You should be proficient in both spoken and written English and have excellent communication skills and experience working in teams.

Your application should include a motivation letter describing your research interests and skills, as well as a CV. Previous knowledge in genome stability, DNA damage response, and telomere biology is a requirement.

Additionally, you should have experience in:

• Research in molecular biology at the university level
• Culture of mammalian cells
• Transfection and transduction of mammalian cells
• Plasmid cloning and amplification
• Protein detection by immunoblot
• Protein detection by immunofluorescence
• Telomere detection by FISH
• Metaphase analysis

The following work experiences are also considered advantageous:

• Selection of mammalian cells
• Design of sgRNA

Your workplace

Your workplace will be at the Department of Molecular Medicine and Virology (MMV), at the Institute of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences (BKV). MMV conducts research and undergraduate and graduate education in Health and Medical Science.

About the employment

Upon taking up the position, you will be admitted to the doctoral program. When you are admitted to the doctoral program, your employment as a PhD candidate will be processed. Read more about each faculty's doctoral education here.

The employment is limited to four years full-time. You will initially be employed for one year, and thereafter the employment will be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time, based on the achieved study plan. Extension of employment up to five years may occur based on the degree of teaching and departmental assignments. In special cases, further extension may occur.

Start date according to agreement.
