Work-Integrated Teacher Education for Primary Teachers in Grades 4–6
Are you attracted by the opportunity to work in the classroom while training to become a teacher? This could be the start of your journey into one of society's most important professions. In collaboration with Umeå University, a work-integrated teacher education program will start in the autumn of 2026 for those who want to become primary teachers in grades 4–6. Skellefteå Municipality is one of the municipalities that has created positions for those who want to work while training to become qualified teachers.
Questions about the education can be answered by the teacher training college at Umeå University. Here you can find more information about the program, how to apply, and contact details:
Work-Integrated Education - Umeå University (https://www.umu.se/utbildning/program/grundlararprogrammet---grundskolans-ak-4-6/arbetsintegrerad-utbildning-id1685139/)
The application period for the program is open from February 16 to March 16.
If you have questions about the position, you are welcome to contact the Career and Development unit at Skellefteå Municipality. The easiest way to reach us is via email at [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]).
YOUR ROLE
As a work-integrated student, you will work as an unqualified teacher in grades 4-6 three days a week at one of the municipality's primary schools. Together with the work team, you will plan, implement, and follow up on teaching based on the curriculum.
The role involves close contact and collaboration with both students, guardians, and colleagues. You contribute to creating structure, security, and motivation in the classroom. Throughout the education, you will have the support of a mentor in the organization, which gives you a good opportunity to develop in the role of a teacher and apply theoretical knowledge in practice.
The work-integrated education comprises 240 higher education credits and spans over five years. The education is offered remotely with a 75% study pace and is combined with 50% work in the school. Two days a week are reserved for scheduled studies and three days for work. The education is conducted remotely, but each semester you will also meet for a few physical gatherings at Umeå University.
YOUR COMPETENCE AND EXPERIENCE
We are looking for someone who has university eligibility and has applied for the work-integrated teacher education for grades 4–6 at Umeå University. To be employed, you must be accepted into the program:

You have a genuine interest in the teaching profession and want to combine studies and work over an extended period. Speaking in front of groups feels natural to you, and you can communicate clearly and pedagogically tailored to the students' age and needs.
Since you are combining work and studies, it is important that you work in a structured manner, take responsibility for your own learning, and have the ability to handle periods of high tempo. You remain calm in changing situations and have a flexible and solution-focused approach.
Experience working with children and youth – in schools, associations, or other activities – is an advantage. In some workplaces, a driver's license may be advantageous, especially where bus connections are limited.
YOUR NEW WORKPLACE
With us, you will become part of one of the municipality's largest operations, with around 35 primary schools spread across Skellefteå. The municipality's rapid development is clearly noticeable here. As a work-integrated student, you will receive a combination of studies and practical work that few programs can offer. You will receive support from colleagues, security in a stable municipal operation, and an opportunity to gradually grow into the teaching profession in line with your studies.
When you submit your application for the teacher education position in Skellefteå Municipality, you will indicate which of the schools included in the initiative you are interested in working at. If you want to read more about each school, you can visit: Primary Schools in Skellefteå Municipality (https://skelleftea.se/invanare/startsida/forskola-skola-och-utbildning/grundskola/grundskolor-a-o?page=1).
GOOD TO KNOW
Since you will both study and work, there are two processes running in parallel. You apply for the education at Umeå University and the position with us at Skellefteå Municipality.
After completing the education and obtaining a teaching license, your employment will transition to a permanent position as a primary teacher in grades 4–6. You will be placed within the principal's area where you had your training placement, through a direct placement without new advertising.
We recruit based on competence and focus on your experience, knowledge, and potential. Instead of a personal letter, you will answer some selection questions and attach an updated CV. When you submit your application, you should also attach a confirmation from antagning.se showing that you have applied for the program.
