We are now looking for a PhD candidate in control engineering at the Department of Systems and Control (ISY).
Your tasks
We are seeking a PhD candidate in control engineering for a research project on the development of future hearing aids. The project builds on previous research on modeling human hearing and aims to develop adaptive hearing aids that can adjust to the user's cognitive state.
The project studies how sound signals and brain activity, measured with electroencephalography (EEG), can be used to estimate both how well a sound is perceived and how demanding the listening situation is. These measures are then used in feedback control systems to automatically adjust the hearing aid's function, with the goal of allowing the user to hear a desired sound source clearly without unnecessary effort.
The project is interdisciplinary and conducted within the research environment ELLIIT (www.elliit.se (https://www.elliit.se)), in close collaboration with researchers in signal processing at Lund University and researchers in hearing and neuroscience at Eriksholm Research Centre, part of the world-leading hearing aid manufacturer Oticon.
As a PhD candidate, you will focus on your doctoral education and the research project you are part of. Your work may also include teaching or participating in other departmental assignments, up to 20 percent of full time.
Your qualifications
You have a master's degree in electrical engineering, engineering physics, mechanical engineering, computer science, or engineering mathematics, or have completed courses totaling at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level as mentioned above, or have acquired equivalent knowledge in another way. The requirement for a degree must be fulfilled by the time the employment decision is made, that is, when the employment contract is signed.
Furthermore, you should be interested in learning new things and exploring the unknown, and you are meticulous with details. You should also have a good ability to communicate in English, both orally and in writing.
Your workplace
The Department of Control Engineering successfully conducts research, doctoral education, and undergraduate education in areas such as autonomous systems, data-driven modeling, complex networks, learning regulation, optimization, and sensor fusion. The department has extensive collaborations with both industry and other research groups around the world.
More information about the department can be found here: https://liu.se/organisation/liu/isy/rt (https://liu.se/organisation/liu/isy/rt). To learn more about ISY, visit: https://liu.se/artikel/lediga-tjanster-pa-isy (https://liu.se/artikel/lediga-tjanster-pa-isy).

Upon taking up the position, you will be admitted to the doctoral program. Read more about the respective faculty's doctoral education here.
The employment is time-limited to normally four years full-time. An extension of employment up to five years may occur based on the degree of teaching and departmental assignments. In special cases, further extension may occur. You will initially be employed for one year, and thereafter the employment is renewed for a maximum of two years at a time, based on the achieved study plan.
