We are now looking for a PhD student in control engineering at the Department of Systems Engineering (ISY).

Your tasks

This PhD position is part of the ELLIIT research program (https://elliit.se (https://elliit.se)) and focuses on providing robots with a reliable situational awareness in challenging and unpredictable environments. The project is based on statistical, model-based methods that combine multi-object tracking with simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). By utilizing semantic information, the goal is to make better data associations, manage multiple hypotheses effectively, and create consistent maps while tracking dynamic objects. The overall aim is to develop robust and scalable methods that enhance the robot's understanding of its environment, with the intention of demonstrating the results in a simplified lab environment. The PhD student will work on a twin project at Lund University, focusing on the learning-based development of the type of semantic information used here.

As a PhD student, you will engage in your doctoral education and the research project you are part of. Your work may also include teaching or participating in other departmental duties, up to 20 percent of full-time.

Your qualifications

You have a master's degree in electrical engineering, engineering physics, mechanical engineering, computer engineering, or engineering mathematics, or have completed courses totaling at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level as mentioned above, or have acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way. The degree requirement must be fulfilled by the time the employment decision is made, that is, when the employment contract is signed.

Furthermore, you should be interested in learning new things and exploring the unknown, and you are meticulous with details. You should also have a good ability to communicate in English, both orally and in writing.

The Department of Control Engineering conducts successful research, doctoral education, and undergraduate education in areas such as autonomous systems, data-driven modeling, complex networks, learning control, optimization, and sensor fusion. The department has extensive collaborations with both industry and other research groups around the world.

About the employment

Upon taking up the position, you will be admitted to the doctoral program. Read more about the doctoral education at the respective faculty here.

The employment is limited to normally four years full-time. Extension of employment up to five years occurs based on the degree of teaching and departmental duties. In special cases, further extension may occur. You will initially be employed for one year, and thereafter the employment is renewed for a maximum of two years at a time, based on the achieved study plan.
