We harness the power of over 40,000 students and staff. Students who inspire hope for the future. Staff who contribute every day to Linköping University tackling the challenges of our time. Our values are based on credibility, trust, and security. By being brave, thinking freely, and innovating, we collectively create a better future through both large and small actions. Welcome to apply for a job with us!
We are now looking for a PhD candidate in control engineering at the Department of Systems Engineering (ISY).
Your Responsibilities
The announced PhD position is linked to the competence center SEDDIT (Sensor Informatics and Decision-Making for the Digital Transformation). Read more about the competence center here: https://liu.se/forskning/seddit (https://liu.se/forskning/seddit).
The focus of this specific PhD project is to explore methods for distributed state estimation for large and heterogeneous sensor networks, with particular emphasis on statistically model-based approaches. As sensor systems scale up to vehicle fleets, drone swarms, and extensive environmental monitoring, traditional centralized solutions quickly become inadequate due to communication constraints, computational demands, and sensitivity to faults in the central node. The work involves developing scalable methods for information compression, robust detection of faulty or malicious nodes, and principles for handling uncertain or varying sensor quality. The goal is to enable efficient, robust, and high-quality situational awareness in complex and dynamic networks, thereby creating conditions for future autonomous and data-driven systems.
The specific project is described here: https://seddit.se/project/robust-large-scale-estimation (https://seddit.se/project/robust-large-scale-estimation).
As a PhD candidate, you will engage in your doctoral education and the research project you are part of. Your work may also include teaching or participating in other departmental assignments, up to 20 percent of full-time.
Your Qualifications
You have obtained a degree at the advanced level in electrical engineering, engineering physics, mechanical engineering, computer engineering, or technical mathematics, or completed courses totaling at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level as mentioned above, or have acquired equivalent knowledge in another way. The degree requirement must be fulfilled by the time the employment decision is made, that is, when the employment contract is signed.
Furthermore, you should be interested in learning new things and exploring the unknown, and you are meticulous with details. You should also have a good ability to communicate in English, both orally and in writing.
Your Workplace
The Department of Control Engineering successfully conducts research, doctoral education, and undergraduate education in areas such as autonomous systems, data-driven modeling, complex networks, learning control, optimization, and sensor fusion. The department has extensive collaborations with both industry and other research groups around the world.
More information about the department can be found here: https://liu.se/organisation/liu/isy/rt (https://liu.se/organisation/liu/isy/rt). To learn more about ISY, visit: https://liu.se/artikel/lediga-tjanster-pa-isy (https://liu.se/artikel/lediga-tjanster-pa-isy).
About the Employment
Upon taking up the position, you will be admitted to the doctoral program. Read more about the respective faculty's doctoral education here.
The employment is time-limited to normally four years full-time. Extension of employment up to five years occurs based on the degree of teaching and departmental assignments. In special cases, further extension may occur. You will initially be employed for one year, and thereafter the employment is renewed for a maximum of two years at a time, based on the achieved study plan.
Please feel free to contact [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) if you have questions about what it is like to work as a PhD candidate at ISY.
Start date by agreement, but we expect you to have started the position no later than December 31, 2026.
A security check may be conducted before a decision on employment is made.
Salary and Benefits
The PhD salary is regulated according to a locally agreed salary scale. Read more about employee benefits here.
