Subject Description
The subject refers to research at the molecular and cellular level regarding the life processes that determine the body's function, both in normal conditions and in disease. Experimental medical science includes, for example, work with biochemical, cell biological, and molecular biological techniques to study various aspects of infection and cancer biology, immunology, genetics, and pathology.
Job Responsibilities
The holder shall primarily conduct internationally competitive research within the subject of experimental medical science as a research leader with a documented independent research line that leads to successful scientific results. This means publishing scientific articles in reputable international scientific journals as a senior author and obtaining larger and longer-term grants in national or international competition as the main applicant at a level that allows for leading and financing continued own research with an active research group. It also means supervising postdoctoral researchers and graduate students as the main supervisor. The holder is also expected to build national and international networks and collaborations within the subject, as well as take on other academic assignments, such as editorial duties, participation in assessment committees, departmental assignments, and organizing conferences.
The holder of the position shall also plan and participate in teaching in the department's courses at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels, as well as participate in pedagogical development work in collaboration with other teachers. During the employment period, the holder is expected to conduct teaching at least at a level that leads to qualification for docent.
The holder who lacks higher education pedagogical training must undergo such training within one year from the start of employment.
For promotion, it is required that the applicant has acquired the ability to master Swedish in writing and speech at least at level B2 according to the CEFR no later than six months before the assistant professorship expires. The University of Gothenburg will offer courses in Swedish that are mandatory within the framework of the employment.
Eligibility
Eligibility for employment as an assistant professor is regulated by the Higher Education Ordinance and the University of Gothenburg's employment regulations.
Eligible for employment as an assistant professor is one who has obtained a doctoral degree in medical science or natural science or has equivalent scientific competence. Primarily, the one who has obtained a doctoral degree or has achieved equivalent competence no more than seven years before the application for the position of assistant professor has expired should be considered. However, those who have obtained a doctoral degree or have achieved equivalent competence earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances. Reasons, dates, and extent of absence must be clearly specified in the application and substantiated with certificates.
The ability to teach in English is a requirement.
Employment
Fixed-term employment for 5 years, full-time (100%). Placement at the Department of Biomedicine. Start date by agreement.
An employment as an assistant professor is fixed-term and defined as a merit-based position. The purpose of the employment is to give the applicant the opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher and qualify both scientifically and pedagogically to meet the requirements for eligibility as a university lecturer. The employment may be renewed, but for a maximum of two additional years, if due to illness, parental leave, or other special reasons, additional time is required to achieve the purpose of the employment. The requirements for promotion to university lecturer are based on the assessment criteria established by the Faculty Board of Sahlgrenska Academy.
