Temporary Position as Lecturer in Military History

The Swedish Defence University is an internationally renowned institution in defense, crisis management, and security. We offer a unique academic environment where civilian meets military. The Swedish Defence University educates Sweden's officers and leads the academic development of the officer profession. We conduct research in law with a focus on operational law and international law, defense systems, military science, leadership and management, military history, and political science.

The military historical research at the Swedish Defence University aims to support officer education by examining various aspects of the military profession's and warfare's history, as well as aspects of the relationship between military power and society in the past, which appear significant in today's context. Through close collaboration with historical research environments outside the Swedish Defence University, the scientific relevance and broader societal benefits of the research are secured.

The Department of Military History has two divisions, the Division of Military History and the Language Center. The position is located at the Department of Military History (IMH) in Stockholm.

Subject Area Description

At the Swedish Defence University, the subject of history, particularly military history, focuses on studying the relationship between war, culture, and society, as well as the development of military strategy, operations, and tactics from historical perspectives.

Job Responsibilities

The position involves teaching and research as well as administration within the subject of history, particularly military history.

Eligibility

Eligible for appointment as a temporary lecturer is someone who has demonstrated pedagogical skills, has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence or other professional skills that are relevant to the subject matter of the position and the job responsibilities included in the appointment.

Assessment Criteria

As assessment criteria for the appointment of a lecturer, the degree of such competence that is a requirement for eligibility for the position shall apply. The assessment of pedagogical skills shall receive equal care as the assessment of scientific skills. Scientific competence must have been demonstrated through the ability to conduct independent high-quality research within the subject of history, particularly military history, as evidenced by publication in relevant, well-respected international journals and publishers. Pedagogical competence must have been demonstrated through documented pedagogical skills through teaching, planning, and implementation of education at the university level.

Previous experience in teaching military history at the Swedish Defence University or another institution is meritorious. The applicant must be able to teach in both Swedish and English.

About the Position

The position is a temporary appointment at 50% with a start date from 2026-07-01 to 2027-06-30.

An appointment at the Swedish Defence University may involve a security clearance according to the Security Protection Act (2018:585).

The position may also involve military placement. If you are already military placed in your current position at an authority and your competence is needed in the Swedish Defence University's military organization, negotiations will take place between the relevant authority and the Swedish Defence University regarding where you will be placed.
