Assistant Professor in Psychiatry with a focus on Neurobiological and Cognitive Processes

At the Department of Neuroscience and Physiology at Sahlgrenska Academy, extensive research and teaching are conducted across large areas of knowledge – from molecule to human. The activities consist of five sections: pharmacology, physiology, health and rehabilitation, clinical neuroscience, and psychiatry and neurochemistry.
The position is located at the Section of Psychiatry and Neurochemistry, where research and education are conducted at the intersection of clinical and preclinical neuroscience. The overarching goal of the research group is to increase knowledge about the neurobiological mechanisms behind affective disorders and how these relate to the clinical picture. The aim is to identify biomarkers that can improve diagnostic assessment, predict treatment responses and side effects, and contribute to more personalized psychiatric care.

Job Responsibilities
The job responsibilities include research in psychiatry focusing on neurobiological mechanisms. Furthermore, it involves actively seeking external funding to establish an independent research line and developing research collaborations within and outside the department at national and international levels.
The job responsibilities also include teaching at the undergraduate level within the medical program and in training for resident physicians in psychiatry, where the applicant's professional experience should be applied in relevant teaching situations. Additionally, supervision of theses and doctoral students is included. Teaching will be conducted in Swedish and English.
Certain administration related to research and teaching, as well as active participation in the department's collaboration work, is also part of the position.
The holder of the position who lacks higher education pedagogical training must undergo such training within one year from the start of employment.
For promotion, the applicant must have acquired the ability to master Swedish in writing and speech at least at level B2 according to the CEFR no later than six months before the assistant professorship expires. Gothenburg University will offer courses in Swedish that are mandatory within the framework of the position.
Eligibility
Eligibility for employment as an assistant professor is regulated by the Higher Education Ordinance and Gothenburg University's employment regulations.
Eligible for employment as an assistant professor is someone who has obtained a doctoral degree in psychiatry, psychology, or neuroscience or has equivalent scientific competence. Primarily, the candidate should have obtained their doctoral degree or achieved equivalent competence no more than seven years before the application period for the assistant professorship has expired. However, those who have obtained a doctoral degree or achieved equivalent competence earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances. Reasons, dates, and the extent of absence must be clearly specified in the application and substantiated with certificates.
The ability to teach in Swedish or English is a requirement.
Employment
Temporary employment for 5 years, full-time (100%). Placement at the Department of Neuroscience and Physiology. Start date by agreement.
An assistant professorship is temporary and defined as a merit-based position. The purpose of the position is to provide the applicant with the opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher and to qualify both scientifically and pedagogically to meet the eligibility requirements for a professorship. The position may be renewed, but for a maximum of two additional years if, due to illness, parental leave, or other special reasons, more time is needed to achieve the purpose of the position. The requirements for promotion to professorship are based on the assessment criteria established by the Sahlgrenska Academy's faculty board.
