The Department of Medicine is the largest department at the University of Gothenburg, with approximately 470 employees and around 300 doctoral students. The activities range from basic research at the molecular level to patient-oriented clinical research, public health science, and social medicine, often in close collaboration with Sahlgrenska University Hospital.
The department conducts education at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels, including within the medical program. Excellence in both research and teaching is a stated goal, and the department strives for a cohesive academic environment where high-quality research, education, and close collaboration with healthcare mutually strengthen each other.

Responsibilities
The position of Assistant Professor in Molecular and Translational Medicine primarily involves conducting excellent research in the subject area. The research should have a clear molecular and translational focus with the potential to contribute to a better understanding of the onset, progression, and treatment of diseases, as well as to the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. The research is expected to be conducted independently and in collaboration with other researchers within the department, faculty, and the university's clinical environments, particularly Sahlgrenska University Hospital.
The position mainly involves research, but also teaching and supervision at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels in related subjects. Teaching may include lectures, seminars, and supervision of theses and doctoral students. The appointee who lacks higher education pedagogical training must undergo such training within one year of taking office.
The position allows for pedagogical merit and development, with the goal that the employee during the employment period will meet the requirements for promotion to university lecturer.
The appointee is expected to actively seek external research funding, contribute to a strong scientific environment, participate in departmental seminars, and develop national and international collaborations.
For promotion, it is required that the applicant has acquired the ability to master Swedish in writing and speech at least at level B2 according to the CEFR no later than six months before the assistant professorship expires. The University of Gothenburg will offer Swedish courses that are mandatory within the framework of the employment.
Eligibility
Eligibility for employment as an assistant professor is regulated by the Higher Education Ordinance and the University of Gothenburg's employment regulations.
Eligible for employment as an assistant professor is one who has obtained a doctoral degree or has equivalent scientific competence. Primarily, the one who has obtained a doctoral degree or has achieved equivalent competence no more than seven years before the application for the position of assistant professor has expired should be considered. However, those who have obtained a doctoral degree or have achieved equivalent competence earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances. Reasons, dates, and extent of absence must be clearly specified in the application and substantiated with certificates.
The ability to teach in English is a requirement.
Employment
The position is a fixed-term employment for 6 years, with a workload of 100%, placed at the Department of Medicine. Start date by agreement.
A position as an assistant professor is fixed-term and defined as a merit-based position. The purpose of the position is to give the applicant the opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher and to merit themselves both scientifically and pedagogically to meet the requirements for eligibility as a university lecturer. The position may be renewed, but for a maximum of two years in total, if due to illness, parental leave, or other special reasons, additional time is required to achieve the purpose of the position. The requirements for promotion to university lecturer are based on the assessment criteria developed by the faculty board of Sahlgrenska Academy.
