The Department of Food and Nutrition and Sport Science develops knowledge for a healthy world through nutrition and sports. Our mission is to conduct world-class education and research in the fields of nutrition science and sports science. The research at IKI is characterized by a clear educational connection, multidisciplinary collaborations, and close contact with the outside world. The main focus of the department's research is to develop and disseminate scientific knowledge and professional competence that can effectively promote sustainable habits regarding sports, physical activity, and nutrition. IKI has two doctoral education subjects: Nutrition Science and Sports Science.

At the Department of Food and Nutrition and Sport Science, sports science is a subject at the doctoral level focusing on sports, exercise, and physical activity from an interdisciplinary perspective. Sports science includes studies of the body and the athletic and physically active individual, the development of sports culture in society, and sports as a collective term for elite, recreational, and experiential sports as well as outdoor life and recreation. The starting point is that physical activity and sports activities can promote health and well-being, performance, and aesthetic experience.

Job Responsibilities

A PhD student should engage in doctoral studies in accordance with the General Study Plan for the subject they are admitted to. The ultimate goal of the education is a doctoral degree. The PhD student conducts research and is expected to contribute to the development of knowledge within the subject. This includes developing their own ideas and communicating scientific results both orally and in writing. The PhD student should develop the knowledge and skills required to independently conduct research in the subject through the production of a scientific dissertation. The doctoral education also aims for the PhD student to develop the ability to apply achieved scientific skills and knowledge in continued research work or in other qualified professional work.

Doctoral education comprises four years of full-time studies and leads to a doctoral degree.

As part of your PhD employment, you may have departmental duties amounting to a maximum of 20% of full-time distributed over the entire education period, which will correspondingly extend the duration of the education. Departmental duties usually include teaching at the undergraduate and advanced levels, but research and administration may also be included.
