The Department of Food and Nutrition Science develops knowledge for a healthy world through nutrition and sports. Our mission is to conduct world-class education and research in nutritional science and sports science. Research at IKI is characterized by a clear educational connection, multidisciplinary collaborations, and close contact with the outside world. The main focus of the department's research is to develop and disseminate scientific knowledge and professional competence that can effectively promote sustainable habits regarding sports, physical activity, and food. IKI has two doctoral education subjects: Nutritional Science and Sports Science.

At the Department of Food and Nutrition Science, nutritional science is a subject at the doctoral level focusing on people's interaction with food, studied from an interdisciplinary perspective. The importance of diet in health promotion and disease prevention is central, but aspects such as environment and performance are also addressed. Nutritional science includes studies on individuals' and nutritionists' behaviors, choices, and habits. This can pertain to both meals and diet as a whole. Learning, change processes, and people's thoughts, attitudes, and perceptions about food are also important starting points in the research.

Job Responsibilities

A doctoral student is expected to engage in doctoral studies in accordance with the General Study Plan for the subject they are admitted to. The ultimate goal of the education is a doctoral degree. The doctoral student conducts research and is expected to contribute to the development of knowledge within the subject. This includes developing their own ideas and communicating scientific results both orally and in writing. The doctoral student should develop the knowledge and skills required to independently conduct research within the subject through the production of a scientific dissertation. The doctoral education also aims for the doctoral student to develop the ability to apply acquired scientific skills and knowledge in continued research work or in other qualified professional work.

Doctoral education comprises four years of full-time studies and leads to a doctoral degree.

As part of your doctoral employment, you may have departmental duties amounting to a maximum of 20% of full-time distributed throughout the entire education period, which will then generate a corresponding extension of the education period. Departmental duties usually include teaching at the undergraduate and advanced levels, but research and administration may also be included.
