Project Title: Characterization of E-sail propulsion in an orbit around the Moon.

This position is part of the MSCA “E-Sailors” doctoral network (https://sisu.ut.ee/esailors/ (https://sisu.ut.ee/esailors/)) aimed at developing a new technology for propulsion in space, known as Electric Sail – E-Sail. The technology uses thin wires deployed from a spinning spacecraft and charged to high voltage. The solar wind, interacting with the charged wires, accelerates the spacecraft without consuming any fuel. The doctoral network addresses multidisciplinary issues related to the design and operation of a demonstrator of the E-sail technology in lunar orbit.

In this project, the doctoral candidate will work on developing methods for measuring the E-sail's propulsion force in orbits around the Moon. Radio frequency signals are used to determine distance and relative velocity to spacecraft, and in this case can be used to sense the changes in the orbit around the Moon caused by the propulsion. The project focuses on developing models for measurement accuracy and optimizing the setup of the method.

Researchers and doctoral candidates at the Department of Space and Plasma Physics contribute to a number of space projects, from sounding rockets to large international projects (such as the JUICE spacecraft on its way to Jupiter), where we have built instruments, planned operations, and analyzed measurement data.

Supervision: Mykola Ivchenko is proposed to supervise the doctoral candidate. A decision will be made upon admission.

Eligibility for Admission

To be admitted to doctoral studies (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:

Mobility rules – Candidates must not have been resident or had their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Sweden for more than 12 months during the 3 years immediately preceding the recruitment date.
Completed a master's degree, or
Completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the master's level, or
Acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.

Information on Admission and Employment

Only those who have been admitted to doctoral studies may be employed as doctoral candidates. The total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. An employed doctoral candidate may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within e.g., education and administration. A new employment as a doctoral candidate is valid for a maximum of one year, after which the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. For studies that will conclude with a licentiate degree, the total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for two years.
