University Lecturer in Translation Studies

The Department of Swedish and Multilingualism is one of the largest departments within the Faculty of Humanities at Stockholm University, with approximately 140 employees and over 5000 students each academic year.

The Institute of Interpreting and Translation at the Department of Swedish and Multilingualism offers degree programs in interpreting and translation at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. The institute conducts research on the translation of fiction and non-fiction, translation sociological issues, as well as media translation and subtitling. Research is also conducted on interaction in interpreted conversations, cognitive aspects of translation and interpreting processes, and written interpreting. Other parts of the department engage in research and education in the fields of Swedish and Nordic languages, Swedish as a second language, and bilingualism. Education is also provided in teacher training and Swedish for international students.

Job Responsibilities

The position includes research, teaching, and supervision at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels, as well as administration. Responsibilities encompass teaching and examination in courses on translation theory, practical translation into Swedish, and linguistic text analysis, as well as supervising theses; additionally, independent research in the field of translation studies is expected. The candidate is expected to participate in both pedagogical development work and the internal work of the institute, as well as actively seek research funding. Administrative tasks may also be included in the position.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for appointment as a university lecturer in translation studies with a focus on translation, the candidate must have demonstrated pedagogical skills and hold a PhD in translation studies, linguistics, bilingualism, Nordic languages, or another language subject with a relevant focus for the position, or possess equivalent scientific competence.

All teaching positions at Stockholm University require the applicant to have the ability to collaborate and suitability to fulfill the job responsibilities.

Assessment Criteria

Particular emphasis is placed on scientific and pedagogical skills. Teaching at the university level in translation theory and practical translation, as well as instruction in the use of CAT tools and experience with machine translation and post-editing, are particularly meritorious. Thesis supervision is also meritorious. Skills must be documented in a way that allows for the assessment of quality in both the scientific and pedagogical activities. Additionally, well-documented good collaborative ability, administrative skills, and the ability to interact with the surrounding community through information, research, and development work will be considered.

About the Position

The position is full-time and is a fixed-term appointment for one year. Commencement on August 1, 2026.
