The Department of Law is one of the larger departments at Stockholm University.

The department has around 150 employees and 5,500 students. More than 70 teachers are fully engaged in teaching and conducting the research that underpins the education. About thirty professors with various legal science orientations are present at the department, creating a dynamic environment with top-class research and a strong international profile.

Legal History

Job Responsibilities

The job responsibilities include teaching, research, and administration as well as contacts with the surrounding community. The position is full-time and includes teaching for 70 percent of the annual working time. Teaching includes lectures, seminars, and other interactive course components, examinations, course responsibility, course administration, supervision, and development and updating of teaching materials.

The position involves research in the field of legal history. Primarily, teaching will also take place in legal history, but significant teaching in other subjects may also be included.

The job responsibilities also include applying for external research funding and following developments in the own subject area and societal developments that are relevant to the teacher's work at the university.

Eligibility Requirements

Eligible for appointment as a university lecturer is, according to Chapter 4, Section 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance, a person who has obtained a doctoral degree in law or has equivalent scientific competence, and has demonstrated pedagogical skills.

A requirement for the position is good knowledge of both Swedish and English.

As a general eligibility requirement, the applicant must have both the ability to collaborate and the competence and suitability otherwise needed to fulfill the job responsibilities.

Assessment Criteria

Particular and equal weight is given to scientific and pedagogical skills. Administrative ability and the ability to collaborate with the surrounding community are also valued. Other skills and experiences that are relevant to the position and the job responsibilities are also considered as merits.

In assessing scientific competence, the scientific quality of the research is primarily taken into account. The scope of the research, especially regarding depth and breadth, is also considered important. Since teaching is expected to occur in other subjects than legal history, research experience from other subjects is meritorious. Furthermore, the ability to plan, initiate, lead, and develop research and doctoral education, as well as the ability to obtain funding for research in competition, is taken into account. The ability to interact both within the scientific community and with the surrounding society is also considered significant.

In assessing pedagogical competence, the pedagogical quality is primarily taken into account. Previous teaching experience is also considered important. Special emphasis is placed on experience in teaching legal history, but teaching in other legal science subjects is also meritorious. Furthermore, the ability to plan, initiate, lead, and develop teaching, as well as the ability to connect teaching to research, is included in pedagogical competence. The ability to interact on higher education pedagogical issues with stakeholders inside and outside the university is also part of pedagogical competence.

Administrative skills and experience, as well as other skills and experiences that are relevant to the position and the job responsibilities, are also counted as merits. Such skills can be demonstrated, for example, through the ability for overarching operational planning, the ability to lead operations and personnel, and through the ability to collaborate. The ability to cooperate with the surrounding community and to inform about research and development work is also a merit.
